So I just got finished watching Die Hard 4.0 for the first time after having a copy given to me more than 18 months ago (I never had any interest). Finally got around to it this morning (I gots a huge DVD backlog of unwatched stuff) & I found it to be totally generic as fuck. For a Die Hard movie. If they had filmed that script as some random action movie, Methinks it might've worked out better for 'em. The only cool things about this POS were Mary Elizabeth Winstead lookin' fineass as usual, Kevin Smith's refreshing cameo as an ubergeek hacker & seeing Maggie Q kick go all Wu-Tang Clan on Bruce Willis for a bit. Such a disappointment. I've now decided there are 3 Die Hard timelines in existance. Much like there are 3Superman movie timelies.
eg;
*Superman The Movie,Superman II,Superman III,Superman IV
*Superman The Movie,Superman II,Superman Returns
*Superman The Movie,Superman II The Richard Donner Cut,Superman Returns (My Choice)
Pick your Die Hard series.

I don't think I've ever dug any of the DH's enough to support my having an opinion on this topic, but I do agree with you, the stunts and CGI for this movie were good, but I've always thought the Die Hard movies were too unrealistic to be realistic...He's always just done too much in my opinion, that makes me able to watch the Die Hard movies, but not gather any kind of real opinion of them, positive or negative...
MEW is teh |337 though, definitely...

To me Last Boy Scout feels much more like a continuation from the original Die Hard than any of the official sequels.

I really liked the title Live Free or Die Hard.
It reminds me of the boxers vs briefs debate. heh
But seriously, from the first, these were great.
Lets particularly talk about the last: SPOILERS GALORE!
John and his wife never got back together again and the whole relationship he fought for in the first movie, and the second is officially over. Even John loses fights, and he was estranged from his family. That was great - to see that pain in John's face reminds you that Bruce Willis is a good actor. And his daughter's disillusionment that her dad who fought for everything good and just was simply not good enough for what "real" people value and work towards. Her comment that tonight it's "Lucy McClain" was very cool. She admits the need for a man like her father, but she has difficulty understanding WHY HER FATHER?
I liked the fact he humanized the catastrophy; he is not a man of the infotainment age. When the hacker was talking about how cool he had always thought a Fire Sale would be, and John ripped him a new one. When he pointed out lives are not just numbers. Kevin Smith was a great "Wizard".
His discomfort around technology (even social technology is classic, and for the first time (in a brilliant show) his same lack of respect or understanding was applied to Martial Arts or anything else that requires an intellectual detachment. He has an easy way to beat a kung fu master - with a SUV and an elevator shaft. It reinforces his character's simplicity to see how anything detailed is pretty much broken down in his mind so he can tackle the obstacle.
I LOVED alot of the other stuff in the movie, but those were really great things. And sure it is over the top, like Ty claims, but he watches knight rider. I tend to think of the Die Hard movies taking place in a world that needs superheroes, and simply has a few real cowboys. I never consider it "the real world."
And the best and most quotable actor in the who series of movies is STILL Alan Rickman.

Hans Gruber is one of the best screen villains ever.

Never much cared for the series either saw the Sam Jackson one straight through and the newest one last year staight through but the others I've only watched in bits and pieces. Waaay too unrealistic.

Die Hard was a good, fun movie that should have been a one-off. I've learned my lesson and now I rarely watch sequels of movies if I feel they don't need to be continued. Die Hard 2 sucked ass and I've never watched any of the others. First Blood is another movie I liked that took a good, believable character and turned him into an invincible cartoon joke. Hollywood will never stop their chronic shit sucking.

With ya there on the stopping it at First Blood,BB. Still wish they'd re-incorporate the original ending where he killed himself. Even if it's just on dvd.

The Die Hard movies are not realistic. not meant to be.
If I tried to watch these like they were realistic, I'd hate them too. Try and watch the Transporter and see how realistic it is, or Ong Bak, or Once upon a time in china.
It is the american version of a wu-xia flick - a kung fu movie. with the typical american screen bravado taking place of dedicated martial arts training.
part two was the worst...
but First Blood REALLY should have ended with him making the sacrifice. It was the message the movie was trying to convey.
