Saul Hansell (New York Times) - While it may not match the very best broadband deals in other countries, Cablevision will start offering the fastest home Internet service in the United States next month.
The new service will offer download speeds of 101 megabits per second and upload speeds of 15 Mbps for a cost of $99.95 per month. It will be available May 11 to all 5 million of the people in areas served by Cablevision, mainly in the New York City suburbs.
Cablevision is deploying a new technology called Docsis 3 which can utilize more of the capacity of a cable television system for data, offering both higher capacity and lower costs. In Japan, J:Com uses the same technology to offer 160 Mbps service for 6,000 yen ($60) per month.

For the technically inclined, what Cablevision is offering is about a 13 Megabyte Down/2 Megabyte upload for $100 per month, when in Japan, you can get a 20 Megabyte per second service for $30 cheaper...
This, my friends, is why we are in the fucked up state that we are in, people doing shit like this...I mean, not the service, that's awesome and I would kill violently to have a connection that fast...But, you could make more money building a service with these capacities, charging a reasonable rate, and have people paying $70 per month to have the 'Mega Speed' package who will likely never even utilize it...
No, we'll fool people here in the US, use confusing tactics to get folk to think 6Mbps is like 6MBps, charge a helluva lot more, and make more money in the process...
I am definitely one suffering in this economy...But I hope to get by just to see the shit crash far enough where this type of capitalism stops...I mean, don't we own the fucking internet..? Why don't we have the fastest shit here like yesterday..?

Let me tell ya something...FUCK Cablevision! Fuck Comcast! Fuck Warner! And fuck every other cable giant out there!! The fuckin pigs charge through the roof ridiculous fuckin rates on cable and internet and then try and cry poormouth all the time all the while jacking up rates and taking away channels.
I'm switchin to Verizon Fios who I'm sure are a bunch of CUNTS too but I have no experience with them yet.
The need more competition in the cable field, it is WAY too monopolized!

In many parts of the world access to internet is crap, overpriced, underserviced, and even has download caps.
And get this, some companies include uploads as well as downloads in your monthly data allowance. There are no providers offering an uncapped service.
I don't see this situation changing any time soon.
