Not counting the classics like bogart, Deniro or Day Lewis, which young actor is the most versatile? I'd say Depp, followed by Penn.

I think Sean Penn is really really good...and hot. I'd so do him
Johnny Depp is very versatile too so he's tough one to vote against...plus he's hot...yeah, I wouldn't do him
To throw a new one in the mix, you must admit that Brad Pitt can do it all...

what a cool topic Gaara..!

I think Depp is cool, I will watch anything he is in, and I haven't been disappointed yet...
But VERSATILE..????
Did somebody say Samuel L. Jackson..?? Or does he not count..? He's not the most HANDSOME dude in the world, but he has played the hell out of some VERY diverse roles...
Many props to Fishburne as well, he is very versatile...Will Smith is no longer the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and has done very versatile roles...Don Cheadle is also very underrated IMO, he is versatile...Wesley Snipes goes from Blade to Down in the Delta to Waiting to Exhale and back to Passenger 57...
Versatility is how I judge my actors...When I can look at a movie, and see another character, that's great acting...I see Al Pacino, and no matter what movie he's in, I'm waitin' for him to say:
Oookay...!!! I'm RELOETED..!!! :pepper:
I don't think Denzel is a great actor, I just think the ladies like him...More power to him, but he is essentially the same character in every movie...He played Hurricane Carter VERY well, but, Hurricane Carter is that same, angry, cool character he's played since he popped out of GLORY...
I will give my nod to Will Smith...He's a handsome guy, and can play some really good roles, from action to comedy...Very few actors have that range, and I must also show Jamie Foxx some love on this tip...But had Will taken the role of Neo rather than that lame ass Wild Wild West movie, he'd be a much bigger superstar than he is now...

IMO Don Cheadle is a better actor than either will smith or Jackosn. Although, Jackson has more pressence.
...Now on to Depp. Depp is by far one of the most, if not THE most versatile actor in Hollywood. Why? Well lets look at his history:
-Played a crazy singing rebbel in "Cry Baby".
-Played an outcast and a orginal character in Edward Scissorhands. This role is very underated, because of the subtle depth of the character. Not only did johnny resort to method acting, but also silent acting (Expressionist) as using facial feautures to tell the story.
-Played the zany, wise cracking axel in Arizona Dream.
-Played the outcast and silent role in Benny and Joon.
-Played the straight man in Gilbert Grape.
-Created one of the most memorable characters in histoty, as the high spirited Ed Wood.
-Played the poet, William Blake in Dead Man.
-Another straight man in Nick of time.
-played as Donnie Brasco.
-Played the druged out Raoul Duke in Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
-Teamed up with Burton as the coward Ichabod Crane.
-Had a cameo as Bon Bon a crossdresser in Before Nightfalls.
-A drug lord in Blow.
-A Keith Richards influence in Pirates.
-A Play writer; J.M Barrie.
-PLayed inspector Fred Abberline in From Hell.
-A Raunchy Earl Rochester in the Libertine (MANY say this is his BEST performance!! Totally unlike depp. The reviews were eye poppiing)
- Also more upcoming roles are:
Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
"Depp as Jean-Dominique Bauby portrays Elle France editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who, in 1995 at the age of 43, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body, save his left eye. Using that eye to blink out his memoir, Bauby eloquently described the aspects of his interior world, from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body to his imagined stories from lands he'd only visited in his mind."
And Shantaram, another popular book. Here's the story:
"Shantaram is a movie that is based on the novel written by Gregory David Roberts. The plot deals with the story of an Australian convict Lindsay who escapes from prison Down Under and goes to India. In India he lives in the slums of Mumbai where he gets involved with the underworld and pretends to be a doctor. The story deals with the transition that Lindsay goes through, from Australia to India and ultimately ending up fighting alongside the insurgents in Afghanistan against Russia. The film is based on a true story of the author (Gregory David Roberts) himself."
Now tell me that's not versatility? Not only is johnny a great method actor, but also very good at expresonist. Which is why Charlie Chaplin had a big influence.

When Depp does a high powered action movie (Loved his character to DEATH in the Desperado sequal) he can have my nodd...He is a brilliant actor, I'll give him that...
I picked a choice that I could see in any type of character, Depp comes close, but can't do them all...Or rather, he hasn't had the roles yet, to do them all...
LoL...If it makes you guys feel any better, he's definitely my favorite white actor, CDR...! All jokes aside though, there a slim pickins of good actors in Hollywood, but the good ones are GREAT...
I think Tom Cruise is an excellent actor, he comes across huge, and convincing on the big screen...Teh Last Samurai was a complete and total and pleasant surprise...

I'm going to go against you all.
I think either Denzel Washington or Nicolas Cage is the best actor out there.
