Movies of the Decade

Okay so while listening to The B.S. report the other day, a topic came up about the end of the decade. It of course started about how because we haven't come up with a name for this decade (like the 90's or the 80's) its sorta hard for people to even realize that a whole ten years has almost passed.

That being said, the discussion turned to what was the defining (or best) movie of the decade.

I'm really curious as to what people think. To encourage responses, you can use whatever criteria you want, but it should be based sorta around enjoyability, rewatchability, originality....you know, those type things.

And I'll hold off on my opinion until a few people have responded so this doesn't turn into a dissection of my pick(s) lol

Shit man, the first 10 years of this decade should be called the end of the era of eras...The 1900's man...They had so many defining events...Seems like the first 10 years of the turn of the century...Marred by so many negative events...I don't know if I'll be able to look back at this decade in the same way that I look at movies from the 80's and 90's...But lets see here...

Using a list, here's what I got for favs from 2000 up to now...

00. Gladiator, Final Destination
01. Iron Monkey
02. LOTR: Two Towers, The Ring
03. Matrix Reloaded, Kill Bill (I consider the film as a whole, not 2 parts)
04. Napoleon Dynamite, Troy
05. V for Vendetta, Batman Begins
06. The Prestige, The Departed, Casino Royale
07. Norbit, Transformers, 300
08. Quantum of Solace, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight, Taken, Cadillac Records
09. Star Trek

If I had to pick from those, Matrix Reloaded would be it...I just loved that movie man...

I'll mention only one at this point: The Descent is one of those great and innovative horror films that came out this past decade, and I think anyone who is a fan of the genre would mention it in a "best of" listing. But to me, personally, the moment I was watching it, and up until the closing credits of the film, I thought to myself "Cotdam! If that wasn't one of the best horror flicks I've seen in the past 12 years; but I'd be just as happy if I never have to watch this film again, because it was just too much for me."

So, for me, while a great little scary movie, it really tested my nerves, and I rate it very low in replayability because it was so suspenseful at the time of watching, most if not all of that luster would vanish upon a second viewing of it.

What a lot of people from my generation would say....and I would probably agree with this, considering the other big point I'm about to make, is that the one to top them all (albeit because it is very recent or not) is The Dark Knight.

That may make a lot of people spit in disgust, but I still don't know of a person who saw it, and didn't see it again, or say it was awesome.

The big thing of notice that I heard while listening to the aforementioned program is that in this decade we saw a big shift to T.V. as a sort of prominent entertainment source. That is not to say T.V. has not been entertaining before, but this is the first time that shows really acted like movies in the way a lot of them developed plots and using the time they had, they could offer more than a movie.

Given all that, one of the panel members voted for The Sopranos as the best movie of the decade. Now I've never seen the show, but I think its an interesting thing to bring up...the way T.V. shows, particularly ones on HBO or Showtime, have really sort of before an ongoing movie, and that has taken a lot of thunder from the movies themselves and they rely more on big gimmicks or special effects to compensate, because of their big budgets and limited time.

I'm not really sure where I lie on this issue, but I thought I'd present the whole argument.

I love Batman, his history, his dark 90s cartoon, the comic, et al. since I was a young child, and although it was a superb movie (Batman Begins, I mean), I wouldn't rate it as high in my list (say if I were only given ten choices).

I'm the kind of guy that doesn't really subscribe to the mainstream point of view, even if I'm in it at the time, so if I (among another 12 or 120 million people) thought that "Batman Begins" or "The Dark Knight" (which I have yet to see) was the decade's greatest film, I'd more than likely change my list to reflect a much lesser-known film as my top film, if only to promote it more to my select audience of subscribers, but to also show that this film can affect/please/entertain you as much if not more than a box-office blockbuster.

I know way too many people that think "Inside Man" was a great film, yet they always fail to mention it unless they are given a specific reason to think of it (be its cast or it's plot).

Oh shit, I definitely would put Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong (The Protector) on my list...I could watch those movies over and over...I think I'm noticing a trend in my picks, lol...If there was some serious ass being kicked, I probably loved the film and would watch it on repeat incessantly...

00. Gladiator,
Going off the date this thread was started, I think I was on the road when Drew started it. No wonder I missed it. It's funny how much an extra 15-20min can add to an already great film. Just like the Director's Cut of Aliens (& a few others), the Extended Cut of Gladiator is da bomb diggedy yo! See it if you haven't already peeps. 3 thumbs up!

People on the net like to crap on The Matrix when they do there top blah blah blah list But you can't deny its impact on the industry or entertainment as a whole. Bullet time is still being used in gaming to this day.
