What do you say to someone who's father has just died?

Your talking to her over the pc... nice casual converation... your laughing together... sharing life's stories... talking about your future.... and the phone rings... and it is her Mom telling her that her father that has been in the hospital has passed. What do you fucking say in that moment? I'm sorry isn't going to cut it.... I'm here for you is shit - cause your 1/2 way 'round the world... so being "here" really means being somewhere else... What do you say?

Yeah not much you can do other than say some standard old platitudes and send some flowers. I'm sorry for your friends loss SB. (see like that)

Best thing to do is just be there for them. Just hang out with them and distract them if they need distraction or just have an open ear if they want to talk about it. Just spending time with them is key

In that case, I would have said something like, ''Whateverhernameis, if you need me for anything, I am a phonecall away...You have my sincerest condolences, and please give my regrets to your family...I'll let you go and be with your family now..."

Less is best. People in those situations don't really care what you have to say and aren't interested in conversations. That sucks though...sorry you had to be in that situation. It's just unavoidable sometimes I guess.
