Hey lads. Having a bit of a dilemma that i cannot seem to solve. my eee netbook crapped out a few days ago saying i was suddenly missing or i had a corrupt sys32 file. I know it ain't a virus as I'm protected up the wazoo. I thought i could fix it by installing xp to flashdrive & repair it (i suspect the hd was damaged by a fall to the tile floor a few weeks back). it did not work. so a friend installed puppy linux to the flashie & said i could retrieve my data that way before taking in to be serviced under warrantee....except I can't!!!

I can access it. i can view it or play it but i cant copy or paste the shit to my passport external. do y'all know much about Puppy Linux? Thanks - Jig

I have seen Puppy but not familiar with it and I am far from a Linux guru but you could try Ubuntu from a Live CD.

01. Download Ubuntu (it's free)

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

02. Burn the ISO to a CD.

03. Boot off the CD.

04. Choose first option (try without making any changes). This will run Ubuntu from the CD without installing it to the hard drive.

05. Click on 'Places' in the top menu.

06. Click on 'computer'. You should see your hard drive. You may see multiple icons if you hard drive id partitioned (one for each partion). ('filesystem' would be your CD)

07. You could insert a flash drive and in a few seconds you should see that icon appear.

08. Double click on your hard drive icon and you should be able to see you files.

09. At this point you should be able to copy the files from your hard drive to your flash drive.

10. After you are done you should unmount both the hard drive and the flash drive (right click on the icons and chose unmount).

11. Shut down (click on the in the upper right to the right of the time and click on shutdown.

Sorry, I had a slight laugh when you said that. Everyone should know that netbooks don't have optical drives. :sarcasm:

Your only option to even remotely attempt a repair would be to use an external USB optical drive.

My error.

There are instructions on the Ubuntu site for creating a bootable usb device directly from a ISO, but I never tried it. I have always done it from the utility inside Ubuntu.

There is a utility that will create a bootable flash drive using the Fedora live cd iso which I have used. The Windows version appears to work better than the Linux version. For Windows just download, unzip and run (no install). Plug in your flash drive, choose the Fedora version you want (12 is the latest) and run. It will download the ISO, extract it to the flash drive and make it bootable.

Of course if the drive can be removed it might be possible to connect it to another PC using an external drive adapter like this.
