Daddy Needs A New Comp!

Okay so I've decided to spoil myself with a new, high powered desktop computer.

I've had my laptop since freshmen year of college (I'm going into my senior year) and it still works great for everything but video games. I actually play a lot of games on my computer, ones that require some pretty hefty hardware to run well.

After beating myself up trying to figure out why my laptop that once ran the games so smoothly now lags, I was told by someone that it's simply because laptop hardware gets out of date pretty quickly, and that the only way to really go if you want to do some serious gaming is a desktop.

And thats how we've arrived here.

I plan to keep my laptop, and use it for pretty much everything else still. I have all my bookmarks, files, and programs on here...and it still works, so I see no need to dump it. That being the case, all I really need is a nice computer that is going to run my games smoothly and occasionally play a movie or something. I don't anticipate doing much, if any, web browsing, or much else on it really. I don't know if any of that matters, but maybe I'd need less on the desktop knowing that I won't really be using it for a whole lot of tasks?

Either way.... pretty much everyone I've talked to (and I'm fully confident the knowledge on this site is far greater than that from which I've been pulling) has been saying that the best and most cost efficient way to go is just to build your own. They say it's not as hard a task as one would think...it's sort of a "buy the parts and put them together" type deal. As of right now I'm just partial to buying one that's already made but I can sort of customize the features...but I have a feeling that shit is probably like twice the price.

As has been discussed before, my knowledge is pretty low about all this stuff despite how much time I spend on the computer, so I'm pretty much a blank slate in terms of what I know.

My assumption is, because I won't be bogging it down with a whole ton of other stuff...and I'll still do all my pron watching and shit on my laptop, I wouldn't need to go top of the line to achieve the performance I desire. That being said, I'm not really looking for absolute top of the line anyway, just because I'm on a budget.

Ideally, I'd like to spend around 900-1200 for the whole package...computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers. Because I'm doing gaming, the mouse and keyboard will probably be a bit more expensive than just the average because I'll look for ones that are tailoring to that... more buttons for keybindings, etc, etc. Speakers I don't really care about at all, I'm fine getting the cheapest of the cheap lol. I know I want a pretty sizable monitor (over 24'' ). I don't even know if HD makes a difference in the monitor or not? I've seen the games perform wonderfully without an HD monitor, so if that's going to bump the price up considerably, I'm fine passing on that.

I haven't done much research, but according to my friends' estimates (two of whom have built their own) they said they paid about 400 for all of the above (everything besides the actual computer) which, if accurate, leaves about 500-800 for the computer itself.

Basically, the short version, if based on your knowledge, the above figures are right...I'm looking to buy or build my own high powered desktop, that isn't necessarily top of the line, but is quality enough to have a decent shelf life and not be outdate in two years, and do that all for around 500-800 bucks.

Any help, direction, suggestions are very much appreciated.

Sorry for the wall of text.

What types of games do you play? Knowing those I could pick out one that best suits your needs.

lol yeah I realized that I probably should have posted those.

Mainly World of Warcraft and Starcraft at the moment. The Sims every now and then if I get bored of the other two.

For WoW, the website has the min requirements as follows:

PC System Requirements

OS:

Windows XP 32/64-Bit (Service pack 3)
Windows Vista 32/64-Bit (with the latest Service Packs)
Windows 7** 32/64-Bit (with the latest updates)

Processor:

Minimum: Intel Pentium 4 1.3 GHz or AMD Athlon XP 1500+
Recommended: Dual-core processor, such as the Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2

Memory:

Minimum: 512 MB RAM (1GB for Vista users)
Recommended: 1 GB RAM (2 GB for Vista users)

Video:

Minimum: 3D graphics processor with Hardware Transform and Lighting with 32 MB VRAM Such as an ATI Radeon 7200 or NVIDIA GeForce 2 class card or better
Recommended: 3D graphics processor with Vertex and Pixel Shader capability with 128 MB VRAM Such as an ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT class card or better

Storage: 15 Gigabytes or more free hard drive space is required

Sound: DirectX-compatible sound card or motherboard sound capability
** The exact hardware requirements for Windows 7 are still being calculated. Only retail versions of Windows 7 are supported.

And two other seemingly relevant FAQs

Does the game require a 3D accelerator?
Yes, the game requires a 3D graphics card. We support a wide range of 3D cards that conform to the system requirement outlined above. Specific 3D card support information can be found here.

Does the game utilize multiple CPU cores?
Yes, the game will recognize and use resources for up to 3 processors during play.

Then for SC2, based on the website's info

Shit might as well be in Chinese for me.

I do have a question that you guys may or may not be able to answer (as I don't know if its game specific or not) but I have an external harddrive, and plan to copy the game files over to them and try to run it off the EHD on my computer. I'd like to do this mainly just to try and avoid the hours and hours of install/patch time. A: is that even possible? B: do you think it'd decrease performance to run it from the EHD as opposed to a file stored on the actual computer?

Oh and I'd also very much like to have Windows 7 on the new comp. I'm pretty sure that comes standard now days...but zomgz to get away from the hell that is Vista on my laptop (and may be one of the reasons my laptop runs these games slower than I'd like) would be wonderful.

Thanks for the help jdog

I would normally suggest building your own but if you prefer OEM then go here:

Studio XPS 7100

http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops ... o-xps-7100

The rig for $949 will be able to handle those games. It includes a 21.5-inch 1080p LCD monitor as well.

Damn I am not too knowledgeable on computers either unfortunately; I just know the basics. I will tell you this though if you want a fast computer -- if you have up to 2.3 GHz of processor (Intel preferably always and not AMD please) speed it will be fast enough for anything -- you also need up to 4 GB of RAM. That is what the "fast" computers have these days from whatever I see whenever I go to computer shops. And yes Windows 7 is highly recommended. From what I have been hearing it is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vista.
About that question that I quoted above, I know the answer to that one, it is pretty easy. Well, running something always from anything connected to a USB port (EHDs, etc) is always slower to perform than if the file was saved on the actual computer itself. You can do the test yourself with a movie, play one from your EHD and play the same one saved on your documents or something, you will see the difference.
Good luck with your computer, although I wonder why you are still playing video games at 21! :D

Of the top, I'd like to know about how much you're willing to spend, that always make it easier pricing, but rest assured...Whatever you get and build will pwn anything you buy, though some of those PC's are pretty nice for the price...

^ Yeah that's why I'm really leaning towards building, I just have no idea how to go about that. I mentioned my price range in the original post. I'm looking for like 900-1200 for the entire thing, not just the computer....but it boils down to like 500-800 for just the computer.

If you are going to build it yourself I can suggest some parts.

It boils down to these specs...

CPU: Intel Core i5-750 Quad Core
$194.99
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D-E P55 w/USB 3.0
$124.99
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3-1333
$81.99
Hard Drive: 1TB Samsung F3 SATA
$74.99
Graphics Card: HIS Radeon HD 5850 1GB GDDR5
$289.99
Case: Antec Three Hundred
$59.95
Power Supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W
$89.99
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM
$99.99
Monitor: ViewSonic VX2250wm-LED Black 21.5-inch LCD
$169.99

Subtotal: $1,186.87

That is a gaming rig. I didn't include the DVD burner but those are around $25-30 at most. Mouse and keyboard would be up to you. As a gamer I prefer headphones for audio. Most of that has free shipping and a lot have mail-in rebates.
