Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi square off

We've seen 3TB hard drives trickling onto the market for the better part of a year, but it's only now that we're seeing more UEFI-equipped motherboards that can actually handle all that storage capacity. So, the benchmarking wizards over at HotHardware decided now would be a fine time to pit a few of 'em against each other, rounding up models from the likes of Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi and subjecting them to a grueling battery of 28 tests. We'll leave it to you to peruse the scores, but suffice to say the Seagate Barracuda XT swept about half the benchmarks, and notched a close second the rest of the time. But is it worth spending an extra $30 over Western Digital's consistently trailing Caviar Green? We'll leave that to you and your wallet.
I don't understand performance reviews of drives of this capacity. Drives this large are going to be for storage and not performance. Nobody should be using a 3TB drive to boot off of.

I use a standard 7200RPM Samsung F1. But I stay booted up 24/7. I never shut down and only reboot with patches.
If you want performance I'd go for SSD.

I'm just rattling that off the top of my head, but I recall reading an article about those being the best of the bunch back in 07-08, but the price for them was too steep for them to be truly viable competitors in the market (and that goes for your average consumer like me).
Do you notice them being any nearer to affordable now some years later, jdog, or do you believe that the extra cost for an SSD is worth the investment?

They are dropping in price but at $180 for a 128GB SSD they are still overpriced from a storage standpoint. Some drives are also problematic. I still think they are a bit off from being perfect.

Speaking of SSD, Anyone know why most tablets (except for a few in the Asian market) are all using those instead of HDD? It's fucking 2011, For such a price range that tablets come in, They should all be coming with a minimum 500GB HDD. Not this shitty 16-64gb SSD shit.

It's mostly due to power draw in tablets. Put a standard HDD in there and you have less battery life, have to worry about heat and then there's the part where people love to be violent to their electronics. When netbooks first came out they came with SSD drives (mostly at SD card performance levels though).

Yeah, I remember the early netbooks with SSD. That disappeared pretty quickly though. So it's a battery thing huh? See, A huge complaint I keep hearing from tablet owners & wannabe buyers is they want the device to hold all the movies/music/ebooks & they don't want to keep changing what's loaded on the thing all the time. Especially since a lot of tablets don't have a full USB port for their externals.

Battery and heat. The 2.5-inch drives can run a bit warm. Nobody would want a warm tablet. The original iPad had overheating problems. See here:

Another alternative, but slow and can add cost is online (cloud) storage. That has really taken off lately but I don't trust my personal info in the cloud.
