"Businesses have no social responsibilities except to make profits"

A statement i would like to know what your veiws are. But to relay your views you must say what in your prespective is socail responisbilty and then why should or should not businesses be concerned wit profit making only.

This is more of an opinion and ethics point of view to managment. So what do you all think about it.

Immediately when I read this quote, my mind drew a parallel to something future NBA hall of fame power forward Charles Barkley said...

"I'm not no role model...Let their parents be their role model..."

All too often people are put into positions where they didn't want to be, and social pressures try to get them to conform and contort their lives to adhere to public opinion...

Why should someone who is lets say, a professional athlete, need to try and be something other people think they should..?

I think the same is said for business...Very few of us probably know what it actually takes to run a company, and that should be enough said for any social responsibility...Like it or not, everything operates on a food chain...People that complain about that are just jealous...

Like, Wal-Mart Supercenters moving into smallish towns, and other stores feel they can't compete...Well Sir, that's just some bullshit, as I can tell you first hand, you surely can...

That quote is a bunch of bull. Businesses do have social responsibilty and need to know that - even if they don't want it. Going into a town is also saying that it will help the community grow. That in itself is social responsibility

Why is a business going into a town a social responsibility, if it's not illegal..?

They could make an argument that if you want us to be socailly responsible make it a law on what we cannot do.....

However socail responsilbity is quite different from legal responsiblity and no they do not have to do anything that do not want to. Such things as pollution and ill treating employe's would constitute legal responsibitity

Social responsiblity is going beyond the law and doing something that would benfit society.

Do any of you remember that case against mac donalds, the fat woman that sued them because they ate their food and it made them fat. That case was generally based around the concept of social responsibilty and that is why mac donalds introduced their salad meals all around the world so that they would provide a choice and be more socailly responsible by providing a much more healthy alternative to their fatty foods

in the model of The Wealth of Nations, the foundation of Economics in America, it is certainly true that business should represent itself to the surrounding community as a benevolent entity, supporting the patrons which support its existence.

to say that the sole foundation of a business's interaction with its community is based on acquistion of profits is true, but it also true that those profits should perpetuate the existence and well being of the business, and therefore the interests of the community.

in this day, the business is not always living up to this.

It is to the benefit of the company to be socially responsible as well. If you're comparing two companies with fairly equal products and fairly equal customer service, would not at least some potential customers be influenced into choosing the company that actually gives something back to the community? There are many companies that do this in a variety of ways. The company I work for gives all it's employees 4 paid hours a month to do community service projects. Not all of the employess take advantage of this, but many do and it benefits them too. Not only do they get off work for 4 hours and get paid for it, they are more rounded people for having made a difference in someone else's life.

I'm not sure how you guys looked at it, but I looked at it the same way that Deepak did...

If I open a fast food burger joint...Why should I have to include a damn salad bar for people..? That's crazy...Take your ass to the salad joint and get a sald, I'm serving greasy burgers in this bitch, like it or love it....

Same thing goes for athletes, why do I have to be a role model cause I'm on T.V...Social responsibility is to the individual, stay your fat ass at home and cook your meals, tell the person holding the invisible M-16 to your dome making you drive to McDonald's that you're just not having that bullshit anymore, and start eating healthy...

Start raising your own kids...IE, be accountable for your own....

But, personally, I think in order for society to strive the business' have to care about more than profit..
