Chrome is the second most used browser behind Internet Explorer globally

The browser wars have raged for years. Generally, the winner in the market has been Internet Explorer thanks to the overwhelming number of computers worldwide that run the Windows operating system (and don’t bother to change their default browser). For a while now the second most popular web browser has been Firefox, but there have been some changes in the market according to the latest stats.

StatCounter's latest numbers for the browser market show that Google Chrome has passed Firefox to take the second place spot. Firefox is still in a very close third place. Firefox had been kicked back to the third place spot in the UK in July of 2011 reports TechCrunch, so a global second place win isn’t that surprising for Chrome.

Chrome now has 25.7% of the worldwide market as of last month and Firefox has 25.23% of the market. Internet Explorer is still dominating the market with 40.63% of the global share.

In the U.S., Internet Explorer has even more of the market with 50.66% share.

In September, Firefox released version 7 of the browser specifically to address memory issues that plagued older versions of the browser.
I don't doubt it. I'm using Comodo Dragon, which is built from the open-source Chromium and recognized as Chrome. Firefox is going to be a distant memory pretty soon.

A distant memory..? Nah...Once people drop Firefox for Chrome, they're gonna miss all the great Firefox extensions...Then they'll develop them on Chrome, Chrome will slow to a crawl, and people will go back to Firefox...

I don't think most people use Firefox for the extensions. They use it because it's not Internet Explorer. I only used Adblock Plus with Firefox when I used it.

Chrome was just released for Android yesterday and it is fucking sweet. Firefox is still my number 1: Chrome and EVERY variant it is is my number 1a. I have Canary, Chromium and Stock installed on my PC and I open them all the time. Doesn't look like Adobe will do official Flash though, which means the rumors are true. Flash is dead, long live HTML5.

So you would recommend Chrome as the better browser for somebody who just surfs, downloads and nothing more? I've been told it's a better option for netbooks. Can any of y'all confirm this?

Sadly, yes...

I say that as its well known I'm as big a fan of Firefox as there is...But as of right now, the only advantages that I can list for Firefox are its extensive extensions and familiarity...If all I'm going to be doing on the web is surfing, I don't bother to open Firefox, period...Chrome opens faster, moves faster, everything...

Chrome is only available for mobile devices that have ICS for now, but when I installed Chrome on my Nexus this morning, I could have cried tears of joy...It is light years ahead of the stock Android browser and fixes many of the sync issues I had...All my bookmarks, tabs, everything was on my phone within seconds...

No way I would bother installing anything except Chrome on a mobile device....

Android finally stepped up to the level of a Windows Phone when it comes to web browsing, eh? One of the things that many Windows Phone 7 reviews pointed out was how amazing the IE browser is on it.
