Well, it looks like it's Windows 7 for me (curtains). Tried upgrading to 10. It download and said preparing installation and then fails.
Windows Update error 80070002
or
unable to determine if there is enough free space

Stopped the Windows update service
Deleted the files under
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
and
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
Started the service
rebooted

Ran the System Update Readiness Tool manually - Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu
Rebooted the pc

Tried running this
WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
rebooted

Downloaded the Win 10 update ISO and created a DVD and tried running that.
It came back with the error
Something happened. We can't tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows 10. Try restarting Setup.

I have over 300GB of free space on C:

Also tried
MicrosoftFixit50123.msi

chkdsk /f

sfc /scannow

This PC is a dual boot PC between Windows and Linux. It also has another internal hard drive that I installed which is formatted as NTFS.

Spent several hours trying this multiple times over the last three weekends.

Really do not care. Only use Windows once a week for about a hour to run a couple of programs and to get the updates. And looking up the printer/scanner and a second printer (both wireless) they say that there may be an incompatibility with Windows 10.

But does anybody have any ideas?

Looks like Win 7 will no longer update. Windows update search ran for 45 minutes before I canceled it.

Probably not much you can do beyond hoping the July update is less problematic.

Although this may be a moot point here, sticking with Windows 7 may not be the worst of ideas. I certainly don't yet recommend upgrading to Windows 10 to my clients, especially if they didn't come with Windows 8 already...

However, if you're interested in troubleshooting this still, I think I have some ideas that we can try...

If you post them I may try them, but I do not know if I would try it before July 29 (I think that is the last day to update for free). But at the moment I probably stay with Win 7. Mainly because I am afraid of it somehow messing up my booting into Linux somehow.
But I would be interested if you have some ideas on how to get the Win 7 updates to work.

I've heard if you have more than one hdd attached that the upgrade gets 'confused'. If you can, disconnect all the other hdds and try doing the upgrade again.
