If I am not mistaken, I think they are supposed to be changing the name of all athletic teams bearing resemblance to Native/First Americans...

This would include the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Braves, etc...

What is your personal opinion of this measure..? I kind of think it sucks a little, but I can DEFINITELY understand the motive behind it...But I don't know who is spearheading the movement...Is it Native Americans..? I would really like to see that stereotype destroyed myself...And people always get used to new names...

Is it appropriate and necessary..?

I've read reports that it all started about the Florida State Seminole football team. But....the tribes in both Florida and Oklahoma said they're fine with the name.

Then I heard an indian woman speak about it...and it makes sense...when she watches a football game she sees people holding up signs "KILL THE REDSKINS"...and yeah, its a figure of speech about football......but I can see how it might be offesensive.

I think the mascots are offesensive...but the name itself?!

In my opinion...it's stupid and riduclous.....pretty soon we'll have animal rights activists taking away all animal names because they're cruel......its a football team's name...how much harm is it really doing?

I've been giving this alot of thought as well. I've always been a Nole fan and they seem to represent the Seminoles with pride, but I can see how some of the other mascots, like the Redskins, might offend people as well. The NCAA's stance is hippocritical IMO, because they want to ban the mascots only in the post season (bowl games and March Madness). The way I see it, either do it all the way or not at all.

This is only for the NCAA. They can't have any Native American or "offensive name" during the postseason on their uniform or mascott. By 2008 the cheerleaders and pep bands are going to be the same way.

I think it's horrible. There is no need for it. It's a team name that happened back in the day. I think FSU is trying to make it ok to have the permission of the tribe that they're using. That's ok with me...but you can't ban them

I think I saw it best, what if the name of the team was the Washington "Rednecks"..? I know I wouldn't want to see a team pop up as the Blackskins, with a mascot running around with a big ass afro, black as the night sky...

Mascots objectify...Being likened to a tiger is one thing...A tiger was not a race of people murdered and beaten and driven off their land...

In the case of Florida State, The Seminoles were actually a tribe in Florida...They may not mind, and trying to get permission is the right thing to do...But, I don't think that they were asked in the first place...But the condition of which the name comes from, I don't know...It may be noble, may not...But the logo on their helmet is an Arrowhead...

I can see how it offends people.....what is stupid is the fact that now we're supposed to take the name off of many pro and college teams...not to mention countless highschool teams and logos and mascots...for what?!

I'd rather they give the money it will take to reprint jerseys and banners and bumpberstickers and hats and stuff like stadium runners to the Native Americans non-gaming relief funds...

The Seminoles did get approval of both the name and mascot from the tribe here in Florida many years ago. In fact, the tribe helped the school "design" how the mascot looked and gave approval to his name, Chief Osceola (a famous Seminole chief). They recently went to the tribe in Oklahoma and gained their approval as well.

At latest report, the Seminoles have been removed from the list of "offending schools" so with them, the question is moot.

As for the other teams, other than the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Braves, I don't know of any other teams that represent themselves as Native American. I know there are probably several, I just can't think of them right now so I'll withhold judgement on their particulars.

Like I said before...this is only for the NCAA I think. The Redskins and Braves dont' have to worry about it yet
