Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'

Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.

Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says he cringes when someone calls the Constitution a †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“living document.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?

President Bush has proposed seven amendments to the Constitution over the last five years, including a controversial amendment to define marriage as a †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“union between a man and woman.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? Members of Congress have proposed some 11,000 amendments over the last decade, ranging from repeal of the right to bear arms to a Constitutional ban on abortion.

Scalia says the danger of tinkering with the Constitution comes from a loss of rights.

It is a dangerous law that infringes on the rights of every American citizen and, as one brave aide told President Bush, something that undermines the Constitution of the United States.

But why should Bush care? After all, the Constitution is just †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“a goddamned piece of paper.†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬?

It scares me that the one person you expect to defend the Constitution has such little regard for it. Whether or not you agree with his politics or some of his actions while he's been in office, this statement by Bush upsets me greatly.

I wouldn't take it seriously. I'm sure a lot worse gets said during meetings. lol

i think the importance of the constitution is over inflated. let's just get the bill of rights for a minute, shall we?

the text has been edited and revised and appended and expanded and i agree, its just damn paper, until we stand as a country that embodies it~! no sense in treated a worn out whore smelling like drunk and crooked politicians and pretending she is still the sacred virgin.

it is a work in progress,.. and it doesn't need to be. as long as it outlines the bill of rights are unequivocably the defined reward for the responsibility of U.S. American citizenship.

Let me ask you this raum, as one who works for the government and has served it in the Armed Forces... I know other presidents have skirted the rights outlined in the Bill of Rights in the past, but doesn't it bother you each time that happens? Doesn't it concern you that if someone with enough 'pull' suspected you of being involved in terrorism, they could tap your phone and computer without a court order and without notifying you? Just all of a sudden, one day they haul your ass off to some Federal Detention center, because they've had a chance to pile their case together?

It bothers the hell out of me. This reeks more of Saddam's Iraq than the America I thought we lived in, where we were free from unreasonable searches and seizures (Fourth Amendment).

Nope, doesn't bother me in the least, if they preserve the bill of rights.
