The Love Ends When You're Born in South Dakota

After South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds signed legislation last week banning nearly all abortions in his state, he made a big culture-of-life statement about how he and the rest of the Religious Right were protecting the weakest among them.

"In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society," said Rounds.

That†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¾¢‚¬Å¡‚¢s an amazing statement coming from the governor of the state that houses the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, which has long been one of the bleakest places in North America from a socio-economic point of view.

According to U.S. Census Bureau poverty status numbers, Shannon County, which encompasses most of Pine Ridge, has a startling 60 percent of families with kids between the ages of 5 and 17 living below the federal poverty line. In households defined as †™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™¢¢¬‚¦‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦¢‚¬Å“female householder, no husband present,†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬? the number of children under five living in poverty is a sickening 68 percent....(continues)

I am not excusing the mis-abuse of {those of indigeous} american descent...

but the nuclear family is not a traditional model among the Pine ridge people, and the REFUSE to be cofined to it. The use of a patrilineal model is their traditon, only in terms of name. A man is not repsonsible for his children... and he does not have to get married. Mother and "mother's family" are responsible. "Mother's brother" is the prime Male figure.

/ they also will call you crazy if you say there are male mountain lions. Everyone knows the Mountain Lion is female and is born of the wind on the mountain ranges.

The notion is that all children are born of spirits that "impregnate men" just as the men "impregnante women." Those spirits are introduced to them in rites of passage. The financial and social responsibilities of the biological male parent are not assumed. The hardships of a person are "the lessons" their spirit is trying to teach them.

it's like the absurdity of a nation that wants a stable economy based around a religion that considers material poverty indicative of Spiritual virtue.
