EAT A DICK TREE-HUGGING HIPPIES!!!

The scientists said their finding is important for understanding the link between global warming and a rise in greenhouse gases. (uh oh)

It could also have implications for the Kyoto Protocol, which calls for developed countries to cut their emissions of greenhouse gases by 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-12. (what tha???)

Keppler and his colleagues discovered that living plants emit 10 to 100 times more methane than dead plants. (but what about?)

Scientists had previously thought that plants could only emit methane in the absence of oxygen.

David Lowe, of the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand, said the findings are startling and controversial.

"Keppler and colleagues' finding helps to account for observations from space of incredibly large plumes of methane above tropical forests," he said in a commentary on the research.

(hmmm, guess hippies owe us an apology, huh?)

But the study also poses questions, such as how such a potentially large source of methane could have been overlooked and how plants produced it.

(and how we can harness it for fuel, anyone???)

"There will be a lively scramble among researchers for the answers to these and other questions," Lowe added.

(like can we use the clean energy bill for a dartboard before our vegetable overlords smother us all with thier toxic emissions? BWA-HA-HA.)

that's right THE PLANTS are the second largest contributor to the greehouse effect. kill the trees.

vertical,

They destroyed EVERYTHING I loved about California with fraudulant information. the ENTIRE incident with Enron, California Energy Crisis, and huge amounts of loss of jobs from the de-commissioned California energy plants that could not meet their new standards, because methane levels did not decrease... when it was due to PLANT LIFE.

they cost more than 970 billion dollars total, without consideration US administrative fees, and lawyers.

that's is more than 200% of the 9-11 attacks and the entire hurricane season that struck in 2005.

When I say I'm on the left, I don't mean I'm with these guys. The environment isn't that big of an issue for me, which is why I would have no problem switching to the right if I moved to the States.

Isn't animal farting like the number one cause of the whole in our ozone layer?

Boy!, that Intelligent Designer thought of everything!

K boys, let's not jump the gun on this just yet. I don't like hippies myself, they smell funny and are clutching at outdated concepts and ideals like group hugs and sing-along protests.

Having said that, "New studies have shown" is a phrase I read all the time and it usually implies that these studies have sponsors, and sponsors require certain results, but whatever, I'll give these kats the benefit of the doubt since the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science seems to be a non-profit independent organization.

From the original article:
A related exciting question is which role the biosphere has played in methane production in the history of the earth, and what kind of influence rising global temperatures and carbon dioxide concentration have on the production of methane from plants. Answers to these questions are important for understanding the feedback mechanisms between climate change and greenhouse gas production. (emphasis added).

The point of the study seems to be about plant's response to imposed change, unless my "hunch" is right and the boys are looking to point fingers away from the poor, poor petrochem club.
