Fiji's military leader Frank Bainimarama has never been a soldier and has no experience of war or politics.

Observers say the quiet naval commodore has never even been seen as a strong leader.

He appears to be running the most polite form of martial law he can muster. :wtf:

Commodore Bainimarama told the BBC on Tuesday his aim was to "get the kids back to school, and shops open for business again".

New Zealand defence analyst Jim Rolfe described him as a quiet, reflective man who believed in constitutional norms.

Many Fijian soldiers and reserves have served in Middle East peacekeeping forces, but with a career in the navy Commodore Bainimarama has not even had that experience.

"Their tactics in the Lebanon were that they were very firm. If they were fired at they would fire back and they shot to kill," said David Dickens, director of New Zealand's Centre of Strategic Studies.

Well the coup has been averted. I was there when the last coup happened. That was however a civil coup and the country's economy is going down the drain because of the political unstability. The country has had a millitary coup before, the year elludes me but i think it was around 1986 Personally I'm proud to be born in that small island nation and I have had great times and memories I will never forget.

With the next election lurking no one really knows what will happen next. The PM of the country is a racist jerk who has actually been showing too much leniency to those who were involved in the down bringing of the labour party govt. One of the reasons why the commander of the Fiji millitary forces was planning a coup also the cut down on millitary spending and yada yada yada.

But yeah I'm also glad that I left when I did. The job losses are immense and I dont think it would have been easy finding a job with the ratio graduating from uni every year.

Fiji actually does have a president. The problem is in the countitution of the country where they allow birth and race a higher distinction.

According to the fijian tradition, there is a cheif of every tribe and only a cheif can be the president. Since all other races are migrants to the country there is also the problem with land ownership. 90% of the land still belongs to the fijians and can only be leased to anyone not bought.

Problems in the country go down to the grass roots with a lot of courption and race issues and discrimination.

Game is slightly different when there is a caste system to consider. The situation is more akin to the Old World, rather than our little Risk board we're playing on.
