KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - A Missouri high school student who was barred from a school dance because he was wearing a Scottish kilt has received an apology from school officials after the action sparked outrage among Scottish heritage supporters.

In a letter dated January 9, Jackson School District Superintendent Ron Anderson apologised to Jackson High School senior Nathan Warmack and said the district would train staffers how to properly apply the school dress code.

The letter came after more than two months of debate and discussion about the actions of school officials when they asked Warmack, who is of Scottish descent, to change into trousers before entering the dance on November 5.

News of the event sparked an Internet petition, which was ultimately signed by more than 10,000 supporters and championed by the Clan Gunn Society of North America, which promotes Scottish heritage and traditions.

"Individual members felt like there had been an injustice to the young man," said society president Rich Gunn.

I would say I wouldn't have let his ass into the prom either with a kilt on...But...I wouldn't want to invoke the wrath of a certain someone... /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I don't see the problem. So what, he was wearing a kilt. People shouldn't be so ignorant toward the cultures of others.

I just love all them people who in the forum validating some moro's right to wear a Bronc's jersey in a pittsburgh school , and ain't said anything about a young man embracing his cultural heritage getting banned from assembly with his peers...

ain't nobody gonna defend him?

(by the way, the kilt IS not a skirt, it is far more like a robe, or if you will a sari, from india.)

It's a skirt...But I'll call it a kilt for the sake of it...Next thing you know, black kids will be walking around with pants hangin' half off they ass and callin' them shorts...

see, it's not a skirt,.. it is a long piece of fabric, about 8 yards, and most of those pleated.

you wrap it around the waist, and pull through, and over the shoulder *wrap twice*, and tuck in to drape down the back.

when a kilt is not being worn, its just a strip of cloth,.. not a stitched bolt fastened around the waist.

lmmfao! /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I had a kid at my high school try to get into a school dance wearing a skirt. We had uniforms at my HS, and he was wearing one of the girl's skirts. He tried to say it was a kilt. That was bullshit, and I'm glad the teachers called him on it.

This kid, however, was wearing a kilt, so I'm glad the school apologized.
