New DVD Burner

#1

Post by Bot »

So, my CD writer is going out the window... Unfotunate considering it's about 17 months old. I don't feel like fucking around with it anymore, and I'd rather just get a DVD burner so I can burn DVDs.

The problem is I'm pretty ignorant toward computers... lol So, I'm not sure what kind of DVD burner I should get. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Man, you can grab a new DVD burner for about $50 bucks...At that price, anyone will do...I am pretty savvy about PC's, or so I think, and I wish I had my store front up, you could be the first customer... /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />

I currently have a Rosewill burner that I got from Newegg...It was an even $50, will burn a DVD in under 10 minutes, and a CD in about 3...Never made a coaster, and I go through DVD's and CD's like you wouldn't believe...My FIRST recommendation is anything Plextor, but they may be a bit pricey...If you're not burning CD's left and right, the Rosewill model I have will suit you just fine...

I take it you don't like Plextor, WAI? lol

Edit: I'll be going to Futureshop to buy this thing... I had a quick look at their site, and I don't see Rosewill or Plextor... lol

Dude... $40 bucks...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827106013

Even better...The Rosewill Drive is now $25

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827190008

For $25 bucks, if it doesn't work, you can swap it out for another one real quick like...Don't even need to RMA it...

I'll have to ask them if they have that brand when I go. Everything's not always on their site. lol

Is 16X the standard speed for DVD burners? That's all I see. What are some other specifications I should look for?

16x is about as sweet as it gets on the DVD burner side, and most spinning that fast will burn a CD @ 48x...Make sure that is is capable of reading and writing ALL the formats, some of them will say that they burn 16x, but only on certain kinds of discs...

DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW

Those should be the main formats, with DVD-R being the most common kind... :tur:

Plextor is the best. A bit pricey but the best.

So, I went to Futureshop today to get a burner... and believe it or not, they had none of the brands you guys mentioned... lol

I went with the LG burner. I don't know how good they are, but the guy said that's the brand he'd recommend. All they had was LG and Sony, and he said there's no difference between the two because LG makes the drives for Sony, or something like that. lol

This is what it says on the box:

DVD: DVD+-R 16x; DVD+RW 8x; DVD-RW 6x; DVD-RAM 5x; DVD-ROM 16x

CD: CD-R 48x; CD-RW 32x; CD-ROM 48x

8.5 GB DVD+R Double Layer; 8.5 GB DVD-R Dual Layer; All DVD Formats.

Plus it came with a 3 year warranty. The total cost after taxes was $120.73.
