Troubleshooting Code 10/43

So, on the laptop I got...

I have 4 different internet devices...

1. The Modem
2. Compaq WLAN MultiPort W200
3. Compaq WL110 PC Card
4. Intel PRO 100 VE Ethernet Port

So, I put XP on the laptop, and most of the drivers loaded automatically...I had some trouble getting the card to work at first, but eventually got in ironed out...I also discovered that the laptop would connect to a wireless network w/o the card...So, maybe I don't know exactly what I'm doing...

But for some reason, I keep getting a code 10 on the Intel PRO device...Usually, when you get yellow splats and code 10, that means that there is a "ghost" device, perhaps from a botched install of drivers...A trip to the device manager in safe mode, to remove all and then let the device install fresh usually works, but not in this case...

So, I thought that port just may be bad, and wrote it off, but I booted the machine earlier this evening, and didn't see a splat anywhere...I went to the device manager, and it was fine...I ran the Intel diagnostics on it, and everything checked out fine there also...So, I created a restore point, and left the machine on for a spell...

When I came back, the device had a Code 43 on it, which said that it had to stop beceause it had an issue...So now, I am thinking conflict, but not sure what I could do to fix it...

Let it be known that I was trying to use the Intel for Ethernet, but I have an Intel PRO 1000 on my desktop machine, and for the life of me, it will not be used as the default connection...But I have a dual ethernet set up, so I am thinking that may have something to do with it, and so my issues w/this...But the splat confuses me...

Any suggestions..?

what brand laptop is this? Does it have a Centrino on board built in wifi? Are you still plugging in a pcmcia wireless card? If so, why? The built in chip will have better reception than the pcmcia card because it uses the entire screen as an antenna.

I have found that for my laptops, using the laptop manufacturer's specific drivers (in my case HP/Compaq and Toshiba) always work better than the individual hardware parts (ie Intel, realtech, ATI, synaptics etc) drivers, especially with the network and display drivers.

You could also try setting up a new hardware profile with the components you will not frequently use (parallel ports, modems, IR ports, Bluetooth etc) set to disabled.

To make hardware profiles you want to click on system in the non-categorized view of the control panel. Then on the tab with the hardware and device manager there is a command button near the bottom that will open a new window. copy your current default profile, give it a name and then set the prompt timeout. Boot into this profile by selecting it when you start system and then disable things you dont want. You can also use the services.msc snapin to disable services based on hardware profile also.

sorry I can't be more descriptive, I am on my linux box right now and am too lazy to go upstairs and check the exact dialog wording...

It's an Compaq Evo n800w...

Funny, it hasn't done it the last few boot ups, everything has been gravy... :shock: I'll keep you posted...

I'd agree with emanon's advice - if it occurs again, do what he suggests..

what about the last couple boot-ups have been different?

in the run box you can type msinfo and hit return, in the app that opens up, click view->system history and go back a few days to see what happened.

The only thing that I can think that is different is that I"m no longer @ my apartment complex, which has an on and off again wireless newtork...Seems that otherwise, it boots up just fine...

And the msinfo32 history isn't showing any changes...I think that something about the wireless network @ my apt bumps things offline...I'm going to go up around campus tomorrow and see if the wireless network there is any different...

i am assuming that you have set the Adapters and Bindings priority order preferences in the advanced menu from the network connections folder....if not that may be another thing to double check
