The Grand Conspiracy - Post NFL Draft 2006 Talk

I think the Texans passing on Reggie Bush...

Is something that had more to do with them wanting to rebuild New Orlenans than it did anything else...I have seen the Texans GM...There's no way in the hell you take a defensive end that has never had double digit sacks in the ACC over the most dynamic player this millenium...No way...If...They needed a fucking defensive end, I'd like to think they could grab one later on in the round...They could have traded that first pick and got a great defensive end, some cash, and probably some players...I've seen the GM of the Texans talk about it, he is defensive and uncomfortable...

My guess..? He was approached and asked to be a patriot, and help build the city of New Orleans...Since they snagged RB, Saints ticket sales are already up...You don't take a non-Julius Peppers type DE with the first pick, especially when Reggie Bush is on the board...That's just not supposed to happen...

I haven't seen anyone that agrees, hopefully, someone here can shed some light...Overall, this was a pretty interesting draft...

Being somewhat removed from New Orleans I didn't even think about that. I wonder if there is some sort of conspiracy. I was just kinda buying the idea that it was a weak financial decision.

I can understand where you're getting this from, and it does make some logical sense....but the NFL is a harsh bisuness, I really doubt someone would sacrafice their team and their reputation in order to help out N.O.

He's probably acting all defensive and uncomfortable because it was a horrible decision at the time....

But in all reality.....no one really knows how successful or unsuccessful draft days were until like 3 years from now. Say Reggie Bush gets hurt often and doesn't play that much...but Mario Williams turns into Reggie White......all the sudden the Texans are super smart.

I didn't think about that A. Personally, I thought that they thought that Dominick Davis could still get the job done for them

Reggie Bush doesn't have to play running back to help the Texans...

That's very true - I agree with you. I don't know what was going through the Texan's minds. Ty, do you think the league was behind this conspiracy? Would they give soem cash to the Texans to do this? I really don't think they would do it out of goodwill. They are a business and want to win. They wouldn't just throw that away to be nice

Do you need a great running back to be a great team? If you look at recent SuperBowl champions, none of them had great running backs.
(Who the hell is Willie Parker?) Corey Dillon is a good back, but not what he used to be. Michael Pittman, you could take him or leave him.
Maybe the Texans thought they could find a more dominant player in a DE then they could in a running back. Or maybe, they didn't want to make the same mistake they made in 2002 when they passed on Julius Peppers to select David Carr. They also are saying that signing Reggie Bush was going to be a problem, so they found somebody that they could sign more easily that's not going to cause trouble.

I think they definately misplayed their hand. If they were so high on Mario Williams, they could have at least traded down and gotten some more picks out of it.

I know what Texas was thinking. They had the worst defense in the NFL last year. They had no pass rush at all either. With Dominack Davis, Andre Johnson and newly acquired Eric Moulds they have a solid offense. It won't put up record breaking numbers but it will produce. It doesn't matter how many points you might score if your defense sucks.

Well, I guess I may be on to something, we all see what happened to the Texas GM...

He bailed...

They say that he was going to bail to take an NFL front office job...And all this shit is sounding more and more fishy...If they were serious about drafting Mario, they could have EASILY traded down slightly, still got him, got cash, and everything else...The NFL draft is a little different than others, you draft according to need sure, but in the first round, you usually take the best player on the board...This has been true probably the majority of the time...

It don't matter if he gets hurt or not, you can't look @ what Reggie Bush has done in his college career, and since then, and say that was a bad, pick...And barring a MAJOR career ending injury, dude is gonna be a stud...Julius Peppers was a BEAST at DE...He played in the ACC, @ North Carolina, and was athletic enough to start on the Tar Heel basketball team...It is no comparing him and Mario...And I am not knocking Mario, I'm sure he's going to turn into a fine player...But Houston could have traded for an establish pash rusher, as there are tons of teams in the leauge w/o a threat as dynamic as RB...Like LG said, he don't have to play RB...Dude can do a variety of things....

The Texas fans were SCREAMING for RB...You guys remember the articles posted...Even the damn QB was like, a guy like that sure would be nice...If their defense was that bad, they could have gotten 3 or 4 players for RB man...Let just say that Mario turns out to be as good as Julius Peppers...JP had 50 tackles and 11 sacks this year...The league leader, Derrick Burgess, had 16...He played for the Raiders.....

There is no way that I can see their team being BETTER if the best they can hope for is 50 tackles and 10 sacks, and that's if he comes in doing his thing...RB changes what you do offensively, special teams, AND what teams have to do defensively...

I just think that we are looking @ our first full fledged NFL exec fuck up/conspiracy...I just don't see how they could not only pass up on RB, but believe that Mario wouldn't be available a few spots down...Makes no sense to me...
