QUOTE(emanon)it is almost as If I am a ventriloquist and I have my hand shoved up raum's backside making his lips move to the words that I am saying!
uhh, in other words, I agreee with what he said about fireworks!!
no offense intended
heh
no offense taken, man.
i am glad someone else agrees.
my favorite quote about Fireworks comes from a person who worked for adobe on photoshop and illustrator (and gave me a sweet deal!). he said "you are delusional if you spent less than 5,000 dollars on hardware and think your computer can handle the full capacity of fireworks in the hands of a capable designer."
well, that wasn't his exact statement, but it was close enough.

they are both (photoshop and fireworks) published by the same company now so it stands to reason that they are not targeting the same exact market segments. i really like the balance of vector based and raster based editing that is available with the default tools and controls in fireworks. Once ya start considering all the plugins that are available, I am sure my comprehension of the abilities of that software barely scratch the surface. I would really love to figure out how to create an animated chart that is dynamically created based data that is generated from a database query that the user specifies the parameters for at runtime.

Yes, but the fact is, the only way you're going to get Fireworks or Photoshop without downloading it with thanks to Mandizzle, is if you have a heap of cash and a stable Windows system (Mac in this case is probably better than Windows - even though I hate Mac)
(see raum's post above)
Plugin-wise: Photoshop and Fireworks are da bomb..! lol
However, GIMP has approximately the same feature-set as Photoshop (OK, so there are those features no-one ever uses except maybe like once in a lifetime) and some parts of Fireworks, and is much more intuitive (well, for me anyway).
If and when I do some serious graphic design as a job, then I'll move to Photoshop/Fireworks and Illustrator. But for now, as a free, small (11MB compared to 200MB), fast, alternative - it does just great!
And to tell you the truth, half the time I just use it to convert image formats.. lol

I would really love to figure out how to create an animated chart that is dynamically created based data that is generated from a database query that the user specifies the parameters for at runtime. What kind of chart. the hardest I have done is a freeform fishbone procedural contact that clearly identifies who and how you you need to contact the people to complete a task chosen from a internal reference number for regulatory compliance with the Dept of Energy standards. (that updates off the network addressbook.
otherwise:
why not use excel? that whole pivot chart thing works pretty well with ODBC data perameters, ya know?
if not and you need better graphics (for some reason, like a game or dynamic website), this works better in flash8 with AS 2.0, and doesn't really even need to be running on a coldfusion backbone with the new AS, which is a true OOE programming language.
at least in my experience, which is pretty extensive.

How good are you with AS, Raum? Have you been flashing long?
As for GIMP.... makes me thing of Pulp Fiction..... LMAO
I might have to look at it, however.... Although I have photoshop and fireworks, I know that I have barely scratched the surface of their potential.
Also, although they are both now offered by the same company, Macromedia was only recently (in business terms) acquired by Adobe. It will be interesting to see what happens with their (adobe's) new line of products. Will they eliminate the overlaps...or continue to maintain product integrity in order to apeal to different markets? Macromedia followed the latter strategy by continuing to maintain Authorware long after Flash far surpassed it. They understood that Authorware was well rooted in Acadamia where it had a strong and loyal following willing to continue to pay for upgrades...

QUOTEHow good are you with AS, Raum? Have you been flashing long?
bout 2 years. but i come at it from a strong OOE programming background and years in data architecture.
graphically, not so much. maybe more than some. i just don't have the time, or to be honest, the artistic talent. i have more experience with fireworks, which simply kicks illustrators arse, and gives me everything photoshop has that i want.
the real goal of the merger was to beef up Adobe with the talent of macromedia, and coordinate the efforts of the two so they could focus the defence of the publishing media sector of the software industry from Apple's Aperture (compare to Photoshop) and Microsoft.
expect fireworks to revamp photoshop, for flash compatibility, and for freehand to disappear soon. flash player will swallow and be the new adobe reader, and flash will integrate with pdf (finally!) natively, though you can already code it very well.
