look,
helmet laws are stupid. So is not accepting there are both:
a. times you SHOULD wear a helmet, and doing so at those times.
b. times when a MOTORCYCLE doesn't belong in traffic, and a helmet will not do you any good.

my friend just got killed by a friggin dumptruck, while merging to the highway in oakland. she was killed instantly.
she had a helmet.
BUT SHE WAS ON THE ROAD NEXT TO A TWO TON VEHICLE.

Raum, you are somewhat right. If you're gonna get hit by a vehicle at high speeds then a helmet really isn't going to do anything, but if you were to just take a nasty spill or have your head go through a windshield then a helmet will help you. I don't think the helmet laws are stupid...people just have to realize that a helmet isn't going to protect them from everything

I used to have a bunch of these bikes, but Now I only have a couple...This Honda is the first of its kind I've seen...I usually get one whenever I got to Wal-Mart, and dispaly them on my litttle work table in my apartment till we move into a new spot this fall...I've got my eye on that Ducati 989 and a Hayabusa...Like Big Ben was riding... /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />

It's scary riding on main roads- often it's the only place I can ride, and there's big semi-trailers rolling by....... :shock:
yet the most hazardous place is the 1st roundabout not 100 metres from my house, the only way out of my house- most people speed down it like they are racing dragsters.... :shock: :shock: nearly every single time I almost get hit...
The first rule of dealing with hazardous situations in Workplace Health & Safety, is Elimination-> GET OUT OF THERE.
No amount of going around it (mitigation) or helmets (personal protective equipment) is gonna save ya if it's just too damn dangerous......
But that shouldn't be the case for my roundabout. A helmet does help- I know that first-hand.

I had an 2001 Suzuki gsxr 600 with a carbon fiber d&d racing pipe on it for a few years. My wife hated it and I didnt have very many people to ride with so i got rid of it a couple summers ago. Although I stipulated that if I sold it I wanted to get a faster car, so now I have a 350Z that fulfills my need for daily G-force experiences

My 'new' bike is an '01 Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter, looks like the old Indian motorcycle of the 40s. 1500cc, 5 speeds, and way cool looks.
As for helmet laws, I wear mine religiously even though we don't have to here in FL. When I worked ER in Louisville, KY years ago I had a good friend of mine have to lay his bike down and slide it under a gas tanker that had pulled out in front of him. He had MAJOR road rash that kept him in the hospital for over a week, but what convinced me of the value of a helmet is the fact that the outer shell of his helmet was "sanded" down to the foam core from sliding down the asphault. Had he not had his helmet on (KY had JUST passed their mandatory helmet law a few months earlier), well, I think you can formulate the picture.
Yes, there are many times when a helmet will do you no good, but there are far more where it'll save your life or at least your cognitive life.
