That is scary but it gets worse. Forests in the colder regions ring the globe. They grow on top of the permafrost and bog layers. When the permafrost melts the ground gets loose and can no longer support the trees. We could end up with a huge forest die off.More carbon and less trees to soke it up.

That IS bad.

There's been a couple of events in the past known as the "big fart" where lots of methane and carbon dioxide were released.

Also, volatile gases from massive flood volcanism has been attributed to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago (as well as the meteorite impact at Chicxulub.

Don't worry, those trees will grow back. And, also remember, back in the Mesozoic Era (dinosaur ages), there was NO ICE, at all, round the globe.

these findings are specifically discounted by the Director of the very same organization.

Vladimir Melnikov, the director of the only program COMPLETELY dedicated to the study of the planet's cryosphere (or body of ice) had this to say, as reported november of last year:

QUOTE"This is just another scare story," added Vladimir Melnikov, director of Russia's Institute of the Earth's Cryosphere, the world's only institute dedicated to investigating the ways in which ground water becomes ice and permafrost. "This ecological structure is balanced and is not about to harm people with gas discharges."

Melnikov also disputed the claims that rapidly thawing permafrost is causing the formation of small lakes in Siberia. "Scientific findings and experience suggest that small lakes result from irregularities when laying oil and gas pipes and other engineering systems. But the scale on which new formations are appearing is small, and they do not pose any threat."

"The boundaries of the Russian permafrost zone remain virtually unchanged," agreed Yuri Izrael, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Climatology and Ecology. "At the same time, the permafrost is several hundred meters deep. For methane, other gases, and hydrates to escape to the surface, it would have to melt at tremendous depths, which is impossible."

The reason is simple:

FUNDING WOULD DECREASE IF THREAT DID NOT EXIST.

Hey pete ...given enough time the world will heal itself and the plants and animals will evolve to deal with the changes. The quistion is how long will it take and and what do we do durring the few thousand years it takes.Of course how long it takes depends on how bad we let things get.

Hey raum..do you have a link for that info..Im an alarmist who likes good news.As far as the trees dieing off... the permafrost only has to melt or loosen below a few feet for an extended time to cause the damage. Some animals, plants or whole eco systems are so perfectly adapted to the conditions that surrond them that they dont handle change very well.

just look the guy up, he is always talking about the cryosphere, and doing research for NATO or someone.
