Curing disease

Post by Bot »

I was thinking about a topic I believe AYHJA started a while ago, and since the Zero debate is now over (and AYHJA has been declared the loser lol), I can start this topic. In the other topic, AYHJA said that if a woman couldn't conceive on her own, then she shouldn't use alternative methods to help her conceive.

It got me thinking about a similar topic... what if someone has cancer or a form of hepatitis or some other severe disease... should they use treatments to help beat the disease?

How can you begin to compare the two? One deals with the creation or introduction of a new life, while they other is all about prolonging or maintaining one that already exists.

My Dad is a cancer survivor and it was a horrible experience. One of those cases where the cure was nearly as bad as the disease. ...and even though the cure aged him significantly, he is still here....5 years beyond his expiration date.
To me, that's priceless.

I just went back to the old topic, and it was actually emanon who created it, not AYHJA. lol

Stalker, I'm not saying people shouldn't seek treatment. My dad had hepatitis C and sought the treatment to beat it.

I'm just curious what AYHJA thinks... I think all of it... not being able to conceive, curring a disease or disability... has something to do with God (if he exists), which is why I think AYHJA is hesitant to accept people seeking alternate methods to help them conceive. It's going against nature, it's going against God.

Of course I could be totally wrong... lol I figured it might make an interesting discussion.

I think that you should take drugs that could cure a disease that you many have. You never know how that disease may change you for the better. I like hearing stories like that of Kramer's dad. It always makes me feel good. Life is short, so take every chance that you have. Cling to life when you can
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

Soren Kierkegaard

What if the inability to conceive is caused by disease? My sister-in-law had SEVERE endometriosis which prevented her from conceiving and necessitating a total hysterectomy. If there had been a cure for that disease other than drastic surgery, would that have been OK? I have a real problem drawing lines like this in the sand. God gave us our brains and our curiosity to drive us to better ourselves. Had it not been for those, we'd still be having life spans in the 30s and 40s. We've managed to advance medicine and science to a point where we can give someone who otherwise is unable to have a child that chance just as we can give someone who has cancer a fighting chance to beat it. Is that playing God? Perhaps. But it's the same "playing God" that cures cancer and heart disease and sets bones and cures Polio. God also gave us a sense of ethics and morality that guides us in the use of our knowledge. We can use that knowledge for good or we can use it for evil; we have that choice. Something else God gives us.

For the record, the zero debate was declared a draw... /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

As for this, however, I certainly cannot say with any certaintly the way things go in an instance like this...I do not recall taking a really clear stance in the other thread, as it was really more along the lines of the scenario that emanon drew out....I thought of it, along the same lines as if for instance, you were born right handed, but for some reason you altered yourself to become left handed...I feel that life is a precious gift, and I personally would not feel comfortable in my own right, artificially trying to create something that seemingly is not meant to be...

That said, I also feel that life is full of lessons and obstacles...Dealing with sickness and things of that nature, I feel are a part of the process...I am an asthma sufferer...I take medication for it...That said, I think that what you do to maintain life is just as important as the reasons you create it...I would not undgergo some sort of bio-surgery to get new lungs...I am going to work with what I have, because its mine...If I single handedly come up with a solution to live forever, and trust me, I am working on it, lol, I feel its meant for me...But if they were handing out immortality in a lab, I would not go...

QUOTE(AYHJA)For the record, the zero debate was declared a draw... /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ... so you mean there were 0 winners? /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />/

....seriously, this is much like the abortion issue where it is difficult to just make a blanket statement. Every case needs to be looked at individually and circumstances should be accounted for. In general, I agree with DD. Who is to say that the people who developed the technology weren't inspired by God to do just that?

However, when it comes right down to it, this is a moral debate.... and the bottom line is, just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that you SHOULD do it. But who am I to judge?

would he who is disapproving of alternative means of pregnancy also be condemning of cesarian birth or post-natal intensive care units? without those two things, more than 15% of women who give birth would die, and far more children would likewise have a very short term of life.

it actually does not matter if you think we should be able to cure disease orr not....the pharmaceutical companies make far more money by not curing you and just treating your symptoms and then selling you more drugs to treat the side effects from the 1st one.
