Foley Placed On Non-Football Injury List, Chargers Don't Have to Pay

SAN DIEGO, CA --The Chargers officially ended the season for starting outside linebacker Steve Foley by placing him on the non-football injury list Monday, a day after he was shot near his San Diego home by an off-duty police officer.

By going on the non-football injury list, Foley will not be able to collect his $1.65 million salary this season, which consists of a $775,000 base and an $875,000 roster bonus. Players placed on the non-football injury list usually don't collect their salary because the injury isn't related to the football field.

Chargers General Manager A.J Smith issued a brief statement Monday afternoon saying, "Steve's health needs to be his number one priority. Football is secondary now. Steve needs to focus on his recovery."

Star receiver still bothered by hamstring injury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers
receiver Steve Smith has more hamstring trouble and
is questionable for Sunday's game against Atlanta.

Smith, who missed 17 days of training camp with a
strained left hamstring, did not practice Wednesday
because of pain in his right hamstring.

Coach John Fox said Smith suffered the injury in practice Tuesday.

This is nothing more than the Panthers trying to throw the other team off it's trail. Smith injured his hamstring, but not the one that kept him out of camp, during practice Tuesday and was held out of Wednesday's workout. I would bet that he does play. But, Smith will likely matchup with Falcons All-Pro DeAngelo Hall.

Don't count on Smith helping your fantasy team this weekend guys.

Steelers beat Dolphins 28-17

Steelers Begin Title Defense In First NFL Game of the Season

PITTSBURGH, PA (AP) -- Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller chugged his way down the sideline on an 87-yard touchdown pass play midway through the fourth quarter, fill-in QB Charlie Batch's third scoring pass of the game, and the Super Bowl champions beat the Dolphins 28-17 Thursday night in the NFL's first game of the season.

Miller's score shouldn't have stood -- TV replays clearly showed his foot splayed out of bounds between the 1 and 2-yard lines. However, Dolphins head coach Nick Saban hesitated to throw his flag, which fell to the turf sight unseen as referee Walt Coleman watched the extra point kick. That meant the Steelers didn't have to try to get the ball into the end zone from short yardage.

McKinnie, Smoot fined for boat party

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- The NFL fined
Minnesota Vikings Bryant McKinnie and Fred Smoot for
their participation in the boat party scandal last October.

McKinnie, a left tackle, and Smoot, a cornerback, both
pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in May
and were ordered by the court to pay $1,000 in fines and
do community service. They are the only current Vikings
to plead guilty to any wrongdoing stemming from the
cruise on Lake Minnetonka.

I read that the Rock Hill Herald reports Steve Smith, questionable with a hamstring injury, may not return until Week 3 at Tampa Bay. MRIs performed on both his hamstrings revealed no severe strains or tears, but the Herald argues Smith should sit out the first two games so he can be healthy for the Panthers' stretch run in the winter. He remains very questionable for Sunday, but make sure to watch the inactives.

Off on right foot

Cleveland (AP) -- Bush didn't dazzle but
he certainly didn't disappoint in his pro debut.
He and Drew Brees led the rebuilt New Orleans Saints
to a season-opening 19-14 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Bush, whose arrival in New Orleans has given the city's
football fans renewed optimism in the wake of Hurricane
Katrina's devastation, finished with 141 total yards.
The Heisman Trophy winner had 61 yards rushing on
14 attempts, caught eight passes for 58 yards and
returned three punts for 22.

YES... Reggie Bush piled up 119 total yards on 14 rushes (for 61 yards) and eight catches (for 58 yards) in his pro debut. He also returned three punts. So much for the 20-touch limit. Bush was the centerpiece of the Saints' offense early and often. His excellent hands will make him a Points-Per-Reception fantasy league monster. Bush played through a minor leg injury, and had a surprising amount of room to run with. He's a good RB2 play again next week against the Packers.

Packers Sign WR Koren Robinson

GREEN BAY, WI --Koren Robinson wasted his second chance with the Minnesota Vikings. The Green Bay Packers are giving him a third, however.

The Packers on Monday agreed to terms with the wide receiver, who was released by the Vikings during training camp after he was arrested following a high-speed chase.

The receiver, who made his first trip to the Pro Bowl as a kick returner last season and signed a three-year, $12.7 million contract extension in March, was one of the Vikings' few bright spots last year.
