K, whatever you do, you have to back up all your shit, don't even take it as a suggestion at this point. You might wanna give it a quick scan for bad sectors. It sounds like it might have a few bad sectors or it could have "developed" some more along the way.
Use your PC's native "Check Disk" scan, it should show you whatever surface problems it might have.

I doubt it'd be bad sectors, if there were some, that'd normally just incur some corrupt data, rather than the drive making noises..

Run a checkdisk M8, see what that comes up with...It should run before windows boots, which will eliminate any chance for the issue to be caused by a shitty program...
Right click on the drive > Tools > Check Now and then check both of the options...
Hope it turns out OK, at least you were able to get your stuff off...

K, got a question. I did the check disk thing when I restarted, but the report disappeared as fast as it appeared, so I have no idea what it said. How do I know if it actually fixed anything?

Yesterday I replaced a bad disk.
Go with what the others are saying. Back up your data IMMEDIATELY. Every minute that goes by, your disk is probably saying goodbye to you.
I'm not trying to scare you.
If it's a Western Digital, go to www.wdc.com and download the bootable iso for Data Life Guard 11 . Burn it on a cd, boot from it and do the extensive test to see if there's something going wrong.
If it's not Western Digital, go to http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ download it and try the rescue programs on it. If you use this cd,

I repeat
************** D*O*N*O*T* ******************
try to "zero out" the disk because that proceedure (from the partitioning progs) will delete
**********************EVERYTHING*********************
and you will *NOT* have *ANY* chance of restoration.
Use that tool only after you REALLY don't need the data on your disk.
Edit: and in regards to your question, it was probably not scheduled right (not because of something you did, just blame windows on this one).
Either way BACK UP EVERYTHING and take the disk to be replaced. I know that WD disks have RMA for 3 years. Don't miss your chance. Oh, and in case I wasn't clear,

sounds like bad sectors to me. I had the same problem on my primary drive recently. What I did to keep my computer functional until I replaced the drive (I still havent done this because I am not in need of additional storage space at this time) is partition the hard drive so the bad sectors are in their own partition and then just deactivate that partition in the windows disk management snap-in. It is kind of a tricky operation and involves using linux, but if you want I can give ya some quick steps. the only bad thing is you lose that storage capacity, but if you have additional drives it is not such a bad thing to sacrifice GB to not have to re-install windows and all your apps, cracks, and tweaks from scratch.
