Miami Hurricanes Lineman Shot to Death

MIAMI,FL -- University of Miami defensive lineman Bryan Pata was shot and killed Tuesday night, shortly after practice, school officials said. He was 22.

The shooting occurred at the apartment complex where Pata lived, about 4 miles from campus. His death was ruled a homicide, Miami-Dade police spokesman Roy Rutland said.

"Right now, we're just gathering ourselves and just trying to pull ourselves together," Miami athletic director Paul Dee said.

Rutland said police were called at 7:30 p.m. to the scene and found Pata's body in the parking lot. A senior who grew up in Miami, Pata was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances around Pata's death were not immediately clear, and Miami-Dade police did not say who made the 911 call after the shooting.

"They just shot him dead," Tonya Casimir, who identified herself as the player's cousin, told ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach by phone from the one of one of Pata's family members. "He's gone."

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman was in his fourth year with the Hurricanes. He appeared in 41 games, making 23 starts, and was expected to be a first- or second-round pick in next spring's NFL draft.

It was at least the fourth time that tragedy involving a player has struck the Hurricanes in recent years.

In April 1996, reserve linebacker and Miami native Marlin Barnes was murdered in a campus apartment. And in 2003, former Miami safety Al Blades was killed in a car accident, about a year after former Miami linebacker Chris Campbell -- who had just completed his eligibility with the Hurricanes -- also died in a crash.

Pata's death was the second incident involving guns this season for the Hurricanes.

In July, reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard before an early-morning workout. Cooper was not seriously injured. Brandon Meriweather, one of Cooper's teammates and roommates, returned fire at Cooper's assailant, taking three shots that apparently missed, police said.

Holy shit! What a week in College Football! We had so many upsets today! Auburn, Cal, Texas....geez. Florida almost lost and this week was so shocking. This really does shake up the BCS

USC jumps Florida for third in latest BCS standings

New York (AP) -- Southern California bounced
back in the Bowl Championship Series standings.

The Trojans were in third place, right behind Ohio State
and Michigan, in the standings released Sunday, returning
to the spot they held before losing three weeks ago.
Southern California had a slight lead over fourth-place
Florida, and Notre Dame, unbeaten Rutgers and Arkansas
also were close behind.

Michigan Stays at #2 After Loss

A close loss on the road to the nation's top team was enough to convince voters that the Michigan Wolverines should still occupy the number two slot in the latest rankings.

The Associated Press kept Michigan at No. 2 after a 42-39 loss at Ohio State, the now-unanimous No. 1 team.

USC overtook Florida for the No. 3 spot after the Trojans clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title with a 23-9 victory over California.

Florida waxed I-AA Western Carolina 62-0, but the voters weren't impressed, dropping the Gators to No. 4. Arkansas retained the No. 5 spot after a 28-14 win at Mississippi State.

Notre Dame stayed at No. 6 after blasting Army 41-9 in South Bend. West Virginia, Louisville, LSU, and Wisconsin rounded out the top 10

Texas stayed put at No. 11, while unbeaten Boiste State moved to No. 12. Oklahoma and Auburn followed at Nos. 13 and 14, and Rutgers -- which saw its BCS dreams shattered in a 30-11 loss at Cincinnati -- suffered the biggest drop, falling to No. 15.

At No. 16 was Georgia Tech, followed by No. 17 Virginia Tech, No. 18 Boston College, No. 19 Tennessee, and No. 20 Wake Forest, which fell six spots after a home loss to the Hokies.

BYU, California, Nebraska, Clemson, and previously unranked Hawaii made up the final five.

BCS Championship Game: Ohio State vs Florida

Florida beat Michigan on Sunday in the only game that mattered.

The Gators, who lobbied hard for this victory, were picked to play No. 1 Ohio State for college football's Tostitos BCS Championship Game, ending any chance for the Wolverines to get the rematch they so desired and thought they deserved.

After the numbers were crunched, it was Florida -- barely. The Gators had a BCS average of .944, and the Wolverines were close behind at .934. The teams were tied in the computer rating, but Florida had a 38-point lead in the Harris poll and a 26-point advantage in the coaches' poll.

The close selection was sure to set off renewed calls to scrap the Bowl Championship Series and go to a playoff.

The Gators leapfrogged idle Michigan by winning the Southeastern Conference championship game, 38-28, over Arkansas.

"It's well deserved, and I'm proud of it," said Florida coach Urban Meyer on the Gators' selection.

The championship game is Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

Michigan's consolation prize is a Rose Bowl bid to play USC, a classic Big Ten vs. Pac-10 matchup of teams left to wonder what could have been.

In other bowls:

Boise State Upsets Oklahoma in Overtime

This was the most amazing bowl game I have seen in a long time! BSU played amazing and had some great plays at the end. This just screams for a playoff!

I would be curious to see how they would play Ohio State. They played hard the whole game.
