Microsoft points can be used to download media at standard of 80 points for a dollar:
Xbox 360 gamers in the U.S. can access Xbox Live Marketplace with a free Xbox Live Silver subscription or a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription and a broadband connection. Pricing is competitive and will vary based on format, media type and whether the content is a new release movie or a classic feature film.
High-definition TV shows will be 240 Microsoft‚® Points per episode, Three Dollars per episode.
standard-definition TV shows will be 160 Microsoft Points per episode, Two Dollars per episode.
New release movies in high definition will be 480 Microsoft Points, Six Dollars per movie.
Standard-definition new release movies will be 320 Microsoft Points, FOUR Dollars per movie*
Classic feature films in high definition will be 360 Microsoft Points, Four Dollars and fifty Cents.
Classic features in standard definition will be 240 Microsoft Points. THREE DOLLARS*.
Less than my local rental stores or Comcast on Demand.
After purchasing a high-definition TV show or movie, gamers can download the standard-definition version at no additional charge. I wouldn't bother with HD, but that is nice to know.

interesting... I suppose it is stored on HDD, so if you have the core system, you are out of luck?

yup core system just not feasible.
I will be the first who would say the Core system for the XBox 360 is a bad idea. It was SUPPOSED to be the system for someone who just wanted a game system independent of the rest of their media kit, but the lack of updates really makes it not worth it. This was not intentional, and sounded like a good idea. The reason being thus: a classic approach to the electronics market in computers was to offer a "no frills" version of your product that let's people get the bare bones of what they want. Unfortunately, this only works for modders, and that market approach is quickly being phased out. But as the media development really took off for the system in a way not anticipated, and the core system just isn't worth it unless you have two 360's, or are getting one for a very small kid who can't take advantage of the Xbox live.
I do know someone who has gotten around every single issue and has stuff on his 360 that you have to hack in, but the workaround is not worth the time, in my opinion. Besides, here you can buy a certified pre-owned nondefective premium 360 for 260 dollars at EB Games in town. that means 300 dollars with a forty dollar ANYTHING GOES warranty for one year.
(some of these were just regifted and the package was never opened. Like a person got two for a holiday, and traded one for some games and stuff.)
