Here is a PDF file that has TONS of chords. (http://www.guitarnotes.com/guitar/notes ... te11.shtml). Learn the basic ones that I mentioned above. Go to a music store that carries EASY guitar chord books (there are tons using songs from all types of music & artists). Find one or two that interest you and you'll be entertaining us with mp3s in no time.
Don't worry if the songs don't sound exactly like on the radio... that comes with time and effects pedals. The hardest thing for me was learning and developing strum patterns; once you get the fingerings and the strum patterns down, you'll sound like you know what you're doing even if you don't.
If you can (since you didn't have to buy the guitar), invest in some lessons. Even if you only take a few, it'll get you going in the right direction.

i think ur best bet is to find a friend who knows how to play the guitar to teach u.
but if u can't have that the next best thing is to get a song book and a record of the song u want to learn.
start with a song with very simple chords, such D, A & G. u may find the chord progression goes something like D A G A. i think that these three chords are the easiest to learn. there are actually variations on how the G chord is played and i sugggest u start off with the simple one.
try strumming each of the chords very slowly and if any one string is muffled or maybe doesn't sound at all, then try to adjust ur fingers that are on the fret board. ur finger may not be pressing hard enough on the string or ur other fingers may be touching strings they shouldn't.
try to sing/hum the tune as u play.
next, practice the finger changes as u chage chords. this can be very frustrating but keep at it. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
once u get a little better at changing chords (even if it's not prefect), try strumming while u hum the tune. u can start by strumming only once per chord change as u hum. remember that ur fingers may not be fast enough yet to keep up as ur humming ur tune. if u strumm a lot at this point, u will have to pause ur humming so ur fingers can catch up.
if u try that technique then maybe u can hum a whole stanza while single strumming ur guitar. or u may even finish the whole song.
consider that a first accomplishment. that will go a long way to encourage u to go on!
have the record of the song handy so u can check how the tune goes if u get confused. u can even play along with the record and once u can keep up u've made another milestone. just make sure ur guitar is in tune with ur record. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

hey, any of you punks been practicing like me? I am learning some pearl jam, cat stevens, and counting crows. I am pretty much following the learn a few strumming patterns, some fingering and chords and you'll look like you konw what you're doing. But I am having a good time learning.

I had a band and we used to play a lot of PJ's and some songs are in alternate tunings that sound amazing (i.e.: given to fly), also i'm proud so say i play 3 soundgarden songs in CGCGGE alternate tuning, damn that one sound great on acoustic and on electric aswell. try those you0ll find a new world of sounds.
