Probably gonna buy a laptop

So, I think this Christmas season when this HD finally crashes and I boot this fucking computer to all hell... I'll probably buy a new one. I was just going to replace the HD because I still have the warranty, but fuck it. I want something new, and I want something portable in case I do decide to leave the city next year. I don't want to have to lug around a large desktop.

Requirements... nothing special. I'm not really a gamer. I play Starcraft and Serious Sam, that's about it. The only other games I play are the arcade games at my forum. lol

I want something fast, and something with a large HD. My current HD has 80 GB, but it seems I can't fill it up past 20 otherwise it starts acting like a bitch. I don't want that anymore.

I want a decent sized monitor. My vision isn't the greatest, so I need something I can see. I actually use the 800x600 resolution because it's easier to read articles. lol

I'd like it to be moderately priced. I spent over $1,600 on my desktop. Keep in mind that included a all-in-one printer, printer cables, wireless adapter and card, and a two-year warranty.

I don't want to spend that again, though. I'd like to keep it under $1,000, maybe even $900. Shit, if I could get something for under $800 I'd be as happy as Michael Jackson at a kid's birthday party... lol

Seriously, what is the draw of a laptop? I have a Gateway notenook convertible tablet, and I swear by it, even though the (replaceable) disk drive is buggy on mine. The latch is busted or something so it just pops open if i bump it, but not hers. and mine works fine if reading a disk, but i don't want to lose it for a while. i will send it back to get fixed in a few months. for one, to be able to "write" (like pen and paper write) is hands down invaluable for a WRITER, and the journal program REALLY does a good text to conversion job, so no "typing it up later" is a big time saver.. also, it takes dictation pretty well, and simultaneously records the audio. i can "write" while stuck in traffic or even laying down staring at the ceiling with my hands crossed on my chest (bluetooth headset and reciever optional, but the onboard mic works well in a direct voice).

they are down abit,.. to like a grand but mine was a little more than a grand (retailed for like 1800 or something.

.. my girl has a lesser beast, but it still the CX210, which has all the same stuff but smaller harddrive (80 gigs). The machines we have are about a year old and perfect for us both with 14" widescreen monitors, as writers this is ideal for us both. (i need spreadsheet and flash development, so mine was customed out a little with memory and what not).

I was going through the Best Buy flyer today, and I saw this desk top. I'm not sure if I'll have the money to buy a laptop, so I'm thinking maybe I should just buy a beater until I can afford one.

ah good thread, well for me i am willing to spend between 1500 and 2000 on a new laptop. i am buying one for an art school next year and i heard that macbooks/mackbook pros are good for photoeditting. anyone have any good recommendations? and is it pretty safe to go with a mac because I am seriously looking into the 15 inch core 2 duo macbook pro.

I don't really care for Mac's, simply because I don't think that the idea that they are THAT much better than PC's at doing digital things will suffice anymore...Unless rendering an image in 20 seconds as opposed to 30 seconds will suffice for all the practicality you will loose in the conversion, its just not worth it...Everybody I know with a Mac also has and uses a PC...So, for what its worth, Mac's are overpriced, flashy, and merely an alternative...

For whatever you get, I will say that anything w/the Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo will be worth the money...

Kramer, I'll head to Best Buy soon and see what I can come up with for your price range, but if you don't really WANT a laptop, it will be cheaper and worthwhile to fix your desktop, which is a good machine...

Hi folks, right now I am also planning on buying a laptop. In actual fact, I'm desperate for my own laptop computer, I've been thinking about it for months and now I need to get one.

Please help.

Here is what I need:

- A robust, sturdy machine that can handle dust, bumps, knocks, and scratches
- Can handle data-intensive & memory-intensive applications
- At least 2 GB of RAM
- A large hard-drive, hopefully 100GB
- A decent-sized screen. I find it hard to see things, so a good-quality screen would be good.
- A CLEAR SHARP screen. None of this shitty LCD shit with smudgy fuzzy text
- Be relatively lightweight. The plane for work has a 10kg weight limit, and just packing a week's clothes plus toiletries etc. can reach that limit fairly easily.
- Can handle playing DVD movies and all sorts of video formats
- Record music, where my amplifier is hooked up to it via an interface
- Handle music track mixing programmes (eg. ACID, ProTools etc.)
- Handle image storage and display, properly
- Run Microsoft Excel, Access, & Word successfully
- Run Macromedia software successfully
- Wireless internet connection
- USB ports etc. etc.
- DVD-RW recording and playing. Should be able to handle most DVD formats
- Store and make PDFs
- Run multi-region DVD player software that can make screencaps
- Possibly be able to view and capture TV broadcasts. I can just connect the standard TV connection via a fancy adapter plug to the laptop, and watch and record TV.
- Windows XP Professional or Home Edition, sp2. Whatever it is, just NOT Vista!

That's about it I think. I won't worry about using it to run Surpac (ShitPac) or MapInfo, I can leave that for work.

Please help. I am really stuck here and need all the help I can get, thanks.

When I was in the market for a laptop, I came across some really good deals on Hewlett Packard machines...You may want to check into the local vendor for them, they ave dual core AMD's, lots of RAM, pretty good sized harddrives, and all the other features you needed...

I've seen some brochures for Toshiba laptops, with the dual core Intels and 2 gig RAM, plus other stuff. Would they be just as good as the Hewlett's, if there are no deals on those where I am?
