I wonder if they make external RAID enclosures...If they do, that'd just make my fucking day right there...

you realize any speed benefits that you get with a raid setup would be lost as you tried to transfer the data over the usb connection right?
QUOTE(fatboy42 @ Jan 6 2007, 10:26 PM) Agreed, thats what I did. Picked up the enclosure on Ebay and a 160 gig drive from Office Depot.
why such a small drive? it must have been like 40$ heh

When I buy any HDD, and specs are the least of my concern, I take the capacity and divide by the price (Price Per GB). Then I take the lowest number and go with it. Usually it takes a while for higher capacity drives to reach a company's scales of economy so their prices are a little higher. Right now it's the 320's and 250's that have the best "bang for buck".
I do have a brand preference though, I usually prefer Seagate first, WD second, and Maxtor last. I generally have had the best experience with Seagate, and a fairly ok ones with Western Digital (2 failures experienced) and Maxtor I avoid because I find their noise to be a little too much for me.
Right now the sweetest drive for price is this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822144417
But that doesn't meet your specs so I'd go with this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136003
I get lost on enclosures though since I never figure out if I want a fan in them or not... /unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Speed isn't my concern, I just want my data from my now defunct machine...But I'm moving into a house this month, so my file server deal may become a reality in the near future, which means I can keep those drives there and work on getting my rig up to run and get files off of at that point...

Gotcha! is this the drive with the bent/missing pins by any chance?
heh

One of them...I had 2 stripe arrays in my old comp, one is working, the other is the one w/the bent pins...But I know where to get that fixed now, just have no reason to fix it till I get my tower back working...I'll probably just spring for a new PSU in a couple weeks...

Yup...
this Seagate 300G works like a champ...
pretty much a plug n' play...
sent about 46G of music to it right off the bat and it was done in about an hour and and 15 min. using a usb2
comes w/ a little stand to set it right on your desk...and it's quiet as hell...
no problems as of yet, so i gotta recommend...
