<-- Pros --> What a great movie...Trust me when I say, you won't figure out what's going on until the very end unless you're a magician...Best film twist I have seen since the first Saw movie, and The Others before that...The film itself is literally a magic trick...Awesome shit...I enjoyed it, and will probably buy it on HD DVD...
<-- Cons --> These are mainly personal quirks, and take away nothing from the film...But there was a slight bit of Sci-Fi that was added that took away some of the 'magic' aspect of it, but it was otherwise an amazing piece of cinema and story telling...
Rating:     /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Sorry, but I found it to be predictable. Bordan's methods in particular were predictable. The Sci-Fi portion made it less understandable, but not less predictable. I enjoyed The Illusionist more then this one for sure.
My Rating:    /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

The Prestige was a third of the movie The Illusionist was.
In fact, The Sci-Fi modeled off of "The Temporal Flux Generator" created by TESLA was the best part in my opinion.
Tesla actually was well portrayed, but he wasn't quite quirky enough. if they had shown him dine and cutting his food into perfect cubes and discarding the rest, or if he refused to speak in the presence of women wearing Pearls (whom he believed to be spies from the planet Venus), it would have made the movie more authentic, but a bit too silly.
----
And side note about Vienna. He is not challenging the Crown Prince, he is challenging a Hungarian noble who has family arrangements and in a desire for power seeks the hand of the "Crown Princess" as it were.
Also, rightly put, these are Victorian times, and this marriage planned would have averted World War 1.
but I guess I am a Magician, so I found all of these movies to be wonderfully consistent with my suspicions as i watched them. neither has a huge twist, but both have charming bends...

I didn't think that the Illusionist was that great...
At the end, when the cop is putting the shit together, I was hoping at some point I would get filled in...I guess it went over my head, hey, it happens...
I never quite put my head around Norton's character (although very well portrayed), I didn't know if he was a magician, illusionist, or wizard...I thought it was good at the same time, but...I just didn't get it...Maybe someone can fill me in on the 'good' aspect of it...
I just thought that the way The Prestige came together was just much more awesome...It may have been predictable in parts, but it was off balance enough I think...I didn't figure it out until the end, and even after it was over, I was still wondering if I saw what I thought I'd saw...
This is getting HD DVD purchased, lol...

SPOILERS FOR THE ILLUSIONIST:
Norton's character was the little boy that the girl princess would sneak away with. He is the son of the king's carpenter. When the guards come looking for him after he goes out with the young princess, she asks him to make them disappear, presumably so her simple life with him can be free of the constraints of her noble blood.
He actually tries at that point to make them disappear, and it fails. So he leave to study the most forbidden of arts, and that has been his motive ever since. To free her from the life of privelidge that kept them apart.
True magic is a combination of three things: that is why Odin has three forms, as does Mercury/ Hermes, Thoth, or any other god of magic.
Those three components are:
The Fool - a wandering youth indulging in innocence, pure of heart and shiny of eye.
The Magus - a man capable of bending phenomenon and perception to demostrate his ability to dictate or adhere to Divine Providence, appearing to conquer even the rigid laws of Science and Physical Nature.
and finally,
The stage the Italians called "El Miserio", the Hermit, the anguish you pay for power. There are two ways you can pay this debt. Like Solomon (or in the Prestige) you attain your power, and in love you abuse it and find love ripped from your chest. Or like Enoch, and the anguish is but an illusion, and you simply cease to be, such as how in The illusionist Norton dissolved into obscurity, and "disappeared."
Compare to Odin:
He is All-Father (master of all, even the giants), The One-Eye (The anguish of the world tree), and Widebrim (a youngish man with a wide brim hat easin on down the road usually whistling)
Compare to Luke Skywalker:
He is in
Episode IV, The Fool,
Episode V he is The Miserable,
and Episode VI, he is the Magus.
This is one of the oldest archtypes of mankind.
Compare to Jesus:
The fool on the road when its all beginning
Then he becomes THE MAGUS on the block with all the miracles
and finally He becomes The Hermit and not even his own disciples get to see him much
and from the Hermit, most emerge with the power that leaves them forever changed and immortal, as it were.

Yeah, it was, but I didn't want that thread to get too far off topic, cause we were about to get some discussions brewing...So, I elected to split it so we can work out our demons, or you all agree that the Presige is a much better film...
Whichever comes first...

I am the Luke Skywalker to your Yoda, one day I will complete my training... /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />
That much of what you wrote, I got and understood...But his tricks, it was never really brought to light, or I couldn't put 2 and 2 together, on which he was...The sword trick, for one...And what were the Asian men for when he did the ghost tricks..?
None of that came to light at the end, less I missed it...

The Illusionist was really good also. I loved that movie. I think Diz or H2 might have the download on the site somewhere. You definitely need to see it
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

I understood everything Raum said throughout the movie....but I'm still sorta confused....
