By PHILIP MESSING
March 7, 2007 --

Blacks and Hispanics are much more likely to be burned by the
system when it comes to simple marijuana arrests, a new study shows.

Even though blacks and Hispanics each account for 25 percent of Gotham's
residents, blacks accounted for 52 percent of misdemeanor arrests for
possession of marijuana in public view, and Hispanics for 32 percent, the study said.

For a great book that includes insight into the hows and whys of prejudice, try Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. It's mostly about how our rapid first impression works, but it also includes a great deal of insight on why people who claim not to be prejudiced still act in a prejudiced way. One of the interesting things is that the same factors affect people regardless of race and that we can actually program our responses to a degree to improve them.
