QUOTE(WAI @ Nov 23 2006, 02:19 AM) Lemme just clear this up, all of the articles mentioned in this thread, except that last one which raum posted (which is a good read imho), are complete bullcrap.
If you find there's a section you don't understand why it isn't bullcrap, care to ask..
How was the Ars Technica article bullcrap; which was a early review critical of only the online experience and some accessibility issue.
I can see the developer's sign on being limited to his company's approach though it does mimic some of things I have heard from other developers. Plain and simple, if you have a decent idea, microsoft's dev kit can do most of the tedious work for you. Make a simple tree, and through standard and realistic algorithms, it will make you a forest, that you can go back and edit. Make a drop of water, and it will give you a lake, that you can edit as it develops. the devkit is VERY powerful, and anyone with a visual studio experience can feel comfortable immediately and begin to organize and express their thoughts.
Sony reinvented the wheel, and presumes all game developers have no life aside from work, like Japanese companies where employees live at corporate hotels... The programmming is barely what you would call object oriented. It is not as easy to approach, and from what I hear, character advancement (a big part of any video game nowadays) is not even supported by relational architecture. It means, if the concept is changed by the designer, you can be forced to go much further back into the development process to adjust the game. and even some of the big game studios are developing out on pcs, and porting into Sony's system because it just isn't convenient enough, and games would take much longer being designed from the ground up in Sony's threadbare software that still requires heavy coding. Also tech support from Sony is pretty dismal compared to corporate support for Microsoft.
360 vs PS3: a developer sounds off.

bumping this back up, but i think it was here where raum originally posted his "it don't work fool" avatar.
this is a quote by brian crescente. one of kotaku's main bloggers and incredibly negative towards what sony has been delivering with its ps3...
QUOTECrecente: One of the things that have baffled a little bit is that there are some things that stand out about the PS3. One of them would be the hardware, you guys have not had any hardware problems. Everyone else has had hardware problems at launch and the PS3 seems pretty rock solid. Why haven't you tried to market it better. I've gone through eight Xbox 360s.
http://kotaku.com/gaming/gdc07/gdc07-a- ... 242652.php
read it: you guys have not had any problems... ... ... I've gone through EIGHT 360's.
which basically tells enough. if Kotaku doesn't know of ps3 hw mal-functions, i do not know who would have.
so. ps3 is a damn good example of "perfect" engineering...
so. where's that "it don't work fool" fit it?

Sony is "still the one to beat", says Epic Games boss Mark Rein.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23503
while NoA boss eggie Fils-Aime has stated that aside from the UK, Microsoft's Xbox 360 is not proving popular amongst European consumers. Like I have said already as well...
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23591
while Sony is still planning to sell 6m by the end of march.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23556
while 360 sales have peaked according to parker:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23556
while Halo premium is going to be $129?!
http://www.playfuls.com/news_06578_HALO ... th_PC.html
lol. talking about the latter, who is ripping of whom?!
(I even didn't think Halo was all that great to start with... then again, I only played the PC version)

Posting a few quote here and there bashing the 360 does what?
Someone goes through 8 360's proves what?
I've had mine for over a year now and have had no problems with it....
the PS3 seems like, as ruam said, it had gaming as an afterthought....which isn't what I look to buy.... I have a computer and a music player already...

err lg. the ps3's been bashed enough. just adding some counterweight.
an afterthought?! an also-thought if you ask me (which you don't but I don't give a toss). it is designed to be the centerpiece around next gen entertainment. whatever that is: games (heck it still says "playstation"), movies, music, photos, internet etc.
and if it indeed is that centerpiece, i'd like it to be quiet...
btw. i am just posting some articles. it is not like I am exaggerating stuff anywhere or being satirical about MS's machine... where am I "bashing 360"?

Ok, Brian Crecente goes through so many units because he is damn near a professional gamer. He also doesn't sleep because he plays so much. He had a 360 before they were available commercially. He had two debug units. He has two at any given time. He worked for the Rocky Mountain Times, and Kotaku, a gamer website of relative high calibur.
Far as I can tell, no one plays their PS3 enough to burn it out.
Face it, with Devil May Cry, Armored Core 4, GTA4 and even Katamari Damacy are coming out on the XBox 360. A little bird says Metal Gear Solid is not far behind, and GDC included a talk with Square who said that Sakaguchi would release Final Fantasy XIII on the XBox 360, if he had his way. He also confirmed a Final Fantasy for the 360 employing the White Engine used by XIII is applicable to the financial and market strategies of Square. Right now, though, Square is raking in dough with the DS and GBA releases, which are white hot at 64 bit graphics, and the PSP which may finally be worth the money I paid for it.
PS3 is not carrying the expected market share, even with an increase in attach rates (which means PS3 owners finally have a few games to buy). That is why Goldman Sachs sees a necessary October price drop of 100 dollars to validate less manufacturing cost. Then, it MIGHT be worth it.
The Best Selling new console is the Nintendo DS. The Best selling non-portable is the Sony Playstation 2. The Best Selling Game is exclusively for the XBox 360. The only thing the PS3 is selling better than is the XBox and the Gamecube.
The most performance from PS3 sales so far was a 55% sales rate of the same for the 360.
If you don't want a 360, fine. I like mine alot, and the games are really a blast. But to be honest, I play my DS more, even at home. I like the touch screen, and the games are fun. My Wii is a party machine, and my 360 is for the times where the world doesn't need to exist.
Still, even beyond console sales, Video rentals from Xbox live outdid any other "on demand" service in terms of video sales for two months now. That is a place most people never saw the 360 shining!
and we get a new firmware up and running, that takes care of a big oversight in the disk speed regulation.
that will fix a number of potential problems with the hardware that were unforeseen, and generally well handled, if you knew what to do.
as for the next gen in particular,.. it is all still half guess work, and much is still up for grabs. If you walk into it, it is a gamble for now.
I see the virtual existence PS3 is advertising, and I am not on board. It's like a Massive Multiplayer online that takes place in a mall with no weapons, no manipulation of physics (even second life has that!)!
I am still waiting for something that makes this console attractive as something other than a cheap computer with some nice media advantages at the sake of having no application development and limited business functionality. It's not a competitor in the gaming market, its a cheaper alternative of the mac for people who don't need office applications.

bleh. i've been a "professional" gamer in the past and never went through any machine.
my VIC-20 was on almost 24/7 before I had the tape deck to store little proggies on. it kept on working and sold it eventually. same with the C64, the Amiga, the Master System, the Mega Drive, the NES, the Colleco, the SNES, the Game Boy, Playstation, the debugging station, the dreamcast and what not. they all worked perfectly for hours on end.
i remember having blown up my c64 though, feeding it 110V through its serial port. it blew the cover right of one of its processors. /:D" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt=":D" />
professional gamer or not. 360 was ILL engineered. but anyhows. that's the past. fact is: no reports about dying living room ps3's have surfaced. the only ones apparently were demo-pods overheating.

we agree here.
