Norton blows but Symantec AntiVirus Corporate edition is awesome...go figure. I've used it for 2 years and it's been fine for me, including when I've had to uninstall it for an upgrade (which in my opinion is always a bitch to do with others). That being said I've had experience with McAfee and I didn't like it. No firewall, we run a linux hardware firewall for the entire network here.

ZoneAlarm Pro with Web filtering 4.5.490.000 as FIREWALL. Been using this for years.

AVG free as ANTIVIRUS. Also use Clamwin free to double check suspicious stuff.

As far as I know I've never had a virus actively running on these computers. Sure I've deleted files downloaded that have been flagged as containing viruses but I scan everything first before I run it.

I used to use Norton Antivirus, the public version. It was terrible as many have commented. I have heard the corporate version is somewhat bettter but I haven't bothered trying it.

I have had .exe's running on my computer that I didnt know about and I didnt install them. One of them was quite clever it used two processes and each one made the other one run.

So if you stopped one process the other process just started it up again. I then used tune up utilities, although this can be done other ways .. but tune up is good for UI anyway i used it to stop the process from starting in the first place when the computer started and then just went ahead and deleted both of them.

not all threats always are detected by the anti viruses and firewalls

which is nice for inbound attacks. But how do you monitor/prevent outbound connection requests to "phone home" or "check for updates" by software that is installed without a valid license or a cracked version?

I don't, which is a gamble in itself but hopefully I'm vigilant enough to figure out what's running legit and what isn't through netstat, spyware killers and the anti virus. I'm more worried about the inbound attacks anyways.
Besides any software firewall can be circumvented if someone is clever enough (not to piss on your guys' solutions though).

AVG completely SUCKS for AV protection. Some nasty virus I DLed wasn't even detected with a scan. Lame!

I know this is digging up an old post...

I rarely use Windows now for much. I had to use it today and I notice AVG puts a box up on the screen saying my version (7.5) will not be supported at the end of the month. Version 8 has antiphishing and antispyware in it.

All I want is a lean, fast antivirus (not another Norton Antivirus resource hog) and I was wondering what you guys were using these days?
