Hi guys. I have been wondering lately on which new messenger client I should use. I am currently using a very old version of aim with dead aim on it. I use it because I can have aliases or names on my buddy list instead of the persons' screen name. So...

1. Which messenger is your favorite and why?
2. Would you recommend it to others?

I have tried Trillian for about 2 minutes and I didn't want to sit there and type in all the names of everyone on my buddy list. Although Astra is really looking like the messenger I want to use (whenever it is released), I would like to see what the other clients are like without downloading them.

GAIM for me...

I like features of all the clients, but there's really no need to have any of them installed if you have GAIM...There are a few pitfalls, but for the most part, being able to be on every client + IRC and retain most of the functionality, you can't beat that...

I will occasionally use YIM and WLM when I want to do webcam stuff or whatever, and I definitely prefer WLM w/the add on packs installed in that case...

You didn't have Windows Live Messenger so I chose MSN as it's probably the closest...

It does everything I need for my IM'ing needs. You also have the option to use plugins such as Messenger Plus, StuffPlug, etc. to customize WLM to your specific wants.

WLM also allows you to connect to your YIM contacts. You can't really share webcam or any of the other advanced features but for basic chat it's great.

GAIM for me too..
Mainly since it's multi-OS, and it's probably the most mature IM client on Linux.. heh

Though, when I'm on Windows, GAIM and/or WLM is good..

I mostly use windows live messenger just because I think its pretty neat. Im using Gaim because of the IRC and yahoo just cause it allows webcam with yahoo's.

Other then that its WLM all the way
