Space and Time

A school of music that studies the rhythm of nature, a school of fashion that studies the elegance of the Universe, a school of design that studies the architecture of the ancients, a school of philosophy that studies the time-tested Truth.

QUOTE(trashtalkr @ Jan 28 2007, 01:23 PM) It would be possible to change outcomes because every decision we make fits into the grand scheme of the universe somehow.

Isn't that a direct contradiction? Unless you think there are multiple grand schemes? If every decision we make fits into this grand scheme, how is it a decision? Isn't it just an illusion? Daniel Dennet, a philosopher/psycologist has a theory that we are not really free, but because of our inability to recognize all the factors going into our decision, we think we are free...and that's all that matters, is hard to argue here.

How the fuck could we change anything? Turn back the clock five minutes I will make the exact same decision. Unless you could somehow take the knowledge you know now back with you, but if that was the case, it would be pretty obvious that changes could be made...

I keep thinking of all the things that could go wrong, but there are things that would be beneficial. However if you could change the past, you'd skew off a tangent timeline .. then there are paradoxes .. the collapse of the space/time continuum ... back to the future .. that sort of thing.

I'd love to change some things in the past. I really would.

Even if you could "travel back in time" that would be part of the whole of space-time. Nothing could be changed, because everything already is.

I disagree though. If you go back in time, then you are in it as if it was the present. You probably would be able to change things. Depending on where you go, just the fact that you are there could be enough to change history
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

Ok, if you turn back the clock five minutes and I was in the same spot I was five minutes ago, then I have no reason to think I could change anything. But if I was put in China, say, then obviously I could. Depends on how you look at it.

I think Humanity would prevent any change from happening because we don't like it. We would spend so much of our time undoing that nothing would ever get done.

For an interesting read on what humanity might do with time travel, see The End of Eternity by Isaac Asimov. The book was written in the early 50's so it is dated in places, but the basic themes hold true.

Thrice Upon a Time by James P. Hogan is also an interesting read if you can find it and then figure out what he's talking about. Very hardcore Science science fiction.
