by the time you start piling roast beef and cheese onto your salad, you might as well just make a sandwhich and grab the cheetos.
I have not seen it mentioned yet, although it may be obvious to most, there is very little to no nutritional value in Iceburg lettuce. If you are eating salads for health and dietary reasons, you will be much better off if you make it with spinach leaves and romaine lettuce. Throw in a little Radicchio and Arugula for added flavor and variety.
For protein, add some crushed peanuts, some tuna or a couple hardboiled eggs (whites only if ya want to go to the extreme). Some of my other favorite salad ingredients are: Peas, green onions, radishes, green/red/yellow peppers, fresh ground black pepper, and garlic. For a dressing try Mixing a little dijon mustard with some balsamic vinager and then emulsifying that with a nice olive oil.

Variety of leafy greens
1 serving of chicken (stay away from chunks of deli meat - high sodium)
Tomatoes!
Cold Peas
Light on the egg
Bell peppers any color
Fruit on the side
Raisins on top
Light on the salt
Fresh lemon wedge squeezed over the salad.
If you use dressing, just go have the grease burger and enjoy yourself.
If you are eating salad for health reasons:use any raw veggies you like
use any fruit you like
use the variety of greens (better mix of vitamins and minerals)
go light on meat, egg, beans, crutons, nuts, and cheese
Avoid dressings that contain oil, cheese, or other dairy. (almost all of them)
Tip: if you are making your salad at home, the finer you chop your meat, the less you need on your salad.

As an update, I've dropped my salad idea in favor of something I figure may be more fulfilling...
Sandwiches...
I can by sub bread for 2 for 6, and I got me some prime chicken breast, bacon, fresh lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, colby cheese, seasoning, and so forth...I've been eating them for two days, and I must say, I feel better...I don't know if they're healthier, but I'd much rather go to the grocery store and spend some cash for fresh veggies and bread, than at McDonald's...
The other night I cooked a chicken club, and man it was so good...I had a ham sandwich dressed down today, it was good too...Its interesting for me to see what kinds of sandwiches I create...

look for sunflower sprouts, if you can't find them use bean or alfalfa sprouts for an interesting twist. cucumber adds good flavor too and they are lower in sodium than pickles

I love banana peppers!
Sandwiches are a good idea A. You just have to be careful that you don't pack too many fatty condiments on there. From what you said you put on it, it sounds like a good, healthy sandwich

"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"
