Once again we seen Parthenogenesis (so called "virgin birth") is biological. it is a natural progression of organic life among certain strains, and though not commonly observed in animals it has been proven with some mutation, female mammals can in fact fertilize their own ovum.

it is interesting that the article refers to the lack of genetic diversity as being one of the chief downfalls of this self fertilization. Conversely it could also be argued that genetic diversity has a good chance of weakening an already strong genetic line also. I am not trying to draw any parallels to or support any of the human "racial purity" fanatics, but if a creature is highly evolved enough to do something like this, it would seem the rules of natural selection would still apply. Maybe next time the mother shark has a virgin birth, the offspring will be born with a natural fear of stingrays.
