Cool News from San Diego Comic-Con

#1

Post by geekboynj »

Lots of big news about the sci-fi and comics world came out of the San Diego ComicCon this past weekend. Thought I'd throw some of it out there, in case anybody either didn't know or wanted to talk about it ...

- Jon Favreau unexpectedly previewed his Iron Man movie, to much applause.

- Zach Snyder has started casting his Watchmen movie, slated to release in March 2009. Jackie Earle Haley (of Little Children & Bad News Bears) will be Rorschach, Billy Crudup (of Almost Famous) will be Dr. Manhattan, Patrick Wilson (of Little Children) will be Night Owl, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (of Grey's Anatomy) will be The Comedian, and hottie Malin Akerman (of Harold & Kumar) will be The Silk Spectre.

- Joss Whedon has confirmed that his Buffy: Season 8 comic with Dark Horse will continue on into Buffy: Season 9, and that Angel will also be getting a 12-issue "After the Fall" comics treatment that picks up where the series left off. Also in the works is a 90-minute "Ripper" movie for BBC that tells the story of Buffy character Giles in his younger days.

- Seth Rogen of Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared, Knocked Up, and Superbad fame will be co-writing and starring in a Green Hornet movie -- the same project that Kevin Smith was attached to for a long time.

- Supergirl will be coming to the Smallville show this season. And she's HOT. But producers confirmed that neither Bruce Wayne nor Batman will ever make an appearance on the show, for licensing reasons. But maybe Wonder Woman -- they're working on it.

- Ridley Scott is releasing a 25th anniversary "Final Cut" version of Blade Runner in time for Christmas, based on input from fans over the years that certain aspects of the original needed to be "fixed".

- Kevin Smith will be directing an episode of the 6-episode Heroes: Origins miniseries that is slated to air in April/May of next year (right after the Season 2 finale).

- Both Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto (Heroes' Sylar) will be portraying Spock in the J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie, due out in Christmas 2008. Since we know the movie is kind of a prequel for the original series, this presumably means that the movie will either begin or end with Old Spock looking back at past times.

- Steven Spielberg confirmed that Karen Allen will be reprising the role of Marion Ravenwood in the next Indiana Jones movie, slated for release in May 2008.

- J.J. Abrams unveiled a poster for his still-unnamed "Cloverfield" movie, scheduled for January 2008. It shows a smoking NYC and a headless Statue of Liberty. Says Abrams, "I want a great monster movie. ... We need our own monster. ... We love Godzilla. But I wanted something that was just insane and intense."

- Harold Perrineau will be reprising his role as Michael Dawson on Lost this season, in a full-time capacity.

Man, I had some really mixed reviews about Supergirl being on Smallville...I'm one of those 'Superman is the lone survivor' types...But admittedly, I'm intrigued about having her around, and another hottie on the show can't possibly hurt...Bummer about the Batman shit, as he and Superman are pretty close in the comics...A hot Nadia Bjorlin should show up on the show as Wonder Woman, which would just make my day...

Can you tell I can't wait until the next season... :D

I'd never heard of Nadia Bjorlin until just now, but after a quick IMDB search, I'm willing to accept her as Wonder Woman, at least for Smallville purposes.

Bringing Kara/Supergirl to the show kind of makes sense at this point. After all, Pa Kent is dead and Ma Kent is off to Washington. Clark needs some family. And it should help give us more detail about Krypton. And, you know ... more eye candy never hurts. :)

I'm looking forward to the new season too. Bizarro!!!

pretty stoked about the Joss Whedon news. i handt heard anything about that. very interested to see what direction the Angel characters will take in the comics. the Buffy ones i've read on S8 so far are pretty top notch. tis nice to hear that Ripper is getting off the ground.
edit: never heard of that Nadia Bjorlin chick either butt after a quick google image search, i can so see her playing Wonder Woman in a movie.

If you get a chance, check out the Spike: Asylum mini-series, which has been collected as a TPB. It's written by Brian Lynch, who -- based on his work in that series -- Whedon has hand-picked to write the Angel Season 6 series. Whedon is even willing to consider what Lynch did in that book to be "canon", because while the events happen after the series finale, they don't step on anything Whedon had planned. Which is to say, he didn't plan to kill Spike in that final battle.

Anyway, I'd highly recommend it ...
