Kanye thrashes 50 Cent in first-day sales race

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Kanye West looks set to win the closely watched duel with rival rapper 50 Cent for the No. 1 slot on next week's U.S. pop album chart, according to preliminary sales data issued Wednesday.

West's "Graduation" sold an estimated 437,000 copies during its first day of release Tuesday, ahead of 310,000 for 50 Cent's "Curtis" and 107,000 for country star Kenny Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates," according to a new "Building Chart" devised by tracking firm Nielsen SoundScan.

The Building Chart gives an early look at how the race is shaping up for SoundScan's final charts, which post projected national sales each Wednesday morning, extrapolated from a panel of merchants representing more than 90% of the U.S. music market.

Some pundits project West will surpass 750,000 copies for the week, breaking the 2007 record of 623,000 copies held by rock band Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight." But West did better with his last album, 2005's "Late Registration," which debuted with 860,000 copies. 50 Cent also will fall far short of the 1.1 million start for his last album, 2005's "The Massacre."

Even though Kanye West can be a brat, such as throwing a fit after the vmas, his music is pretty good.

i dunno. West's new shit seems to be more of the same. the beats are sparser too in some cuts which means he can longer hide his mediocre rhyming in a cloud of sound.

So now that Kanye has out sold him (http://www.sohh.com/articles/article.php/12584), will he actually keep his word and stop rapping?

I knew the idiot wouldn't keep his word lol he was only being too over confident, this is only what he said in response to his loss: http://www.sohh.com/articles/article.php/12591

Grr!!!

i was not impressed with either of these albums.

Kanye's lacked the ability to take you on a journey. No laughs, just a bunch of B-Sides and no-hits with chipmunks in the chorus. At least TRY something new...

50's was not as good overall, but he at least sounds like he TRIED to do something different.
(gotta wonder about him and Tim-bu-lin singing a duet, though). And they need to get the techno out of his diet, he sounds a little light in his loafers with that casio in the background.

I will give them another listen today, but I ain't givin neither of these a free pass!

The only way they could be more garbage would be in Shirley Manson was on the hook!

I somehow agree with you Raum; however I kind of prefered Kanye's.

50 Cent album, I just hated it. He kept on talking about the same thing from 'The Massacre', using the same phrases several times, oh..."touching the right spots at the right time", "Act like a bitch, I'll call you a bitch", etc...grr!!! His album is boring!!!
And..."Ayo Technology" doesn't just fit wih his CD...sounded more like a scrap that didn't make the final cut for "FutureSex/LoveSounds"!
