Earlier this month, Western Digital announced an addition to their GreenPower line of energy efficient hard drives, bringing them to the enterprise. Now, they are announcing that the drives are ready to go and have begun shipping all around the world, with the Caviar GP 500GB units consuming a mere 6W when under load.

The new GP units are the same as the existing 1TB units, so there is not a lot to say about them. They are now in retail for an MSRP of $150, making them within the reach of anyone who might want “enterprise” class performance out of a drive that uses very little power. You can read the full press release at Western Digital's site.

Let's just hope this will be a start to the extinction of power hungry pcs that need 2 nuclear plants behind them to power them....

Hmm...Maybe I've just never cared enough, but...I don't know if I've ever had a really power hungry PC...I suppose my laptop can be considered power hungry, I don't know...But I think it only has a 150 watt PSU...And a battery that will power this big sumbitch for an hour or so...

What are some comparisons..?

Western Digital or Seagate? Is there really a difference and does it really matter to a casual user? I'm looking for a new external for Time Machine and I don't really know which to pick. I have a Seagate Free Agent Pro right now and it's just fine... but it's not firewire. Any ideas?

Edit*
I read the External HD Thread. Nevermind... haha.
