"Book 'Em Deng-O" Boycott Beijing Olympics?
Reporters Without Borders shows the power of images with this:
The Olympic Torch route has now become just one long protest about Tibet.
Unless China smartens up and stops trying to crush the Tibet people,
this poster may well become the image of these Olympic games.
My observations:
1. Tibet holds the headwaters of the rivers that feed over 25% of the world's population.
If political and diplomatic action does not solve the China - Tibet problem,
it will devolve into a hot war .
2. China is a culture based on face-saving and shame (the West is motivated similarly by guilt and greed), so the boycotting of the opening ceremonies by international heads of state would have a greater effect than a total boycott of by athletes.
Should other countries boycott to show solidarity with Tibet?
What about Chinese complicity in the Darfur genocide?
George Bush, of course, has said:
"Hey, no problaymo, I'm goin' to the Limbo Games! Got me front seat tickets.
The Dengster's gonna let me throw out the first javelin thingy! Heh, heh, heh."
:o

These Olympic games, much like your posts oot, seemingly start well, but are destined to end badly...
Again, if you want to play and have fun, do it in shits and giggles...Jest here and there is OK, but you run out...

What's the point..? I'm sure I'd thoroughly enjoy reading what you wrote if you could turn off the dumb shit for 10 seconds...The first parts of your post are interesting, but by the time I get to the ridiculous shit, I'm no longer in the mood to respond...

Have you bothered to find out what what George Bush ACTUALLY said?
It is not too far from this:
"Hey, no problaymo, I'm goin' to the Limbo Games! Got me front seat tickets.
The Dengster's gonna let me throw out the first javelin thingy! Heh, heh, heh."
He just said it in a Texas drawl.
:(

Re: "Book 'Em Deng-O" Boycott Beijing Olympics?
What did he actually say, and rather than paraphrase, source me so I can read it myself, please...Thanks..!
BTW, I think you'll find that the majority of people here don't think very highly of Dubya in the first place, so to mock or make fun of him is really kinda a moot point...But if you must, whatever...I'm just so happy for you and the rest of the Canadians that your Prime Minister is a shining example of an astute politician...
Which reminds me by the way, is he really boycotting the games..?

Übermensch sez: "I'm just so happy for you and the rest of the Canadians that your Prime Minister is a shining example of an astute politician..."
Our PM, Harper, is an Ass-Toot politician.
He has also borrowed Tony Blair's kneepads so he can lick Dubya's balls.
Due to the nature of our multi-party system, it will probably be another two years before we can turf him out.
He is presently widely hated, but not as much as his mentor, Mulroney, who was a Reagan ass-kisser.
When Mulroney was rejected by voters, the Conservative party went from a 200 seat Parliamentary majority
down to 2 (yes, that is only two) members elected.
Harper must be stopped before he sells us out to the USA.
Canadians realise this is the essence of evil.
Which reminds me by the way, is he really boycotting the games..?
Harper, the Weasel, has called off a boycott, but he is conveniently not going to personally attend the opening ceremony.
Something about having to do laundry that day, or it's that time of month, or a meeting with a guy about a thing...

Re: "Book 'Em Deng-O" Boycott Beijing Olympics?
OK, First of all, boycotting the Olympics over Tibet is stupid.
The Olympic committee not allowing them to be in China would make sense. But the Olympics are not a political venture. They are supposed to be an institution of good will. I disagree with what China is doing to Tibet, but what REALLY would boycotting the Olympics do? Infuriate China more than a;ter their stance toward Tibet.
Your understanding of Chinese sensibilities is very off. China will take huge offense but not back down. You can not intimidate China and expect them to back down. They are not politically correct, and you can not force apology or recourse from them. Look how well demonstration works in China. Look at what happened with the pilot who went down. If anything, they would take pride that China, more than those who boycott the Olympics, holds sacred the institution of the World Games.

raum sez: "OK, First of all, boycotting the Olympics over Tibet is stupid."
Which version of 'boycott' are you talking about?
1. Athletes and nations boycott entire games.
2. Dignitaries boycott opening ceremonies.
3. Public boycotts advertisers.
1. Least effective. As raum says, the Chinese will not respond to Western values.
2. Easiest. Best alternative. Sends a message in a language understood by the Chinese.
Just look at Spielberg's pullout and the immediate positive response from Beijing.
3. Hardest to do. Most insidiously effective. Nobody has the moral fibre or the balls to do it.
Makes Coca-Cola, Visa, Ford, GE, ABC, NBC, FOX, etc. decide publicly between freedom fighters and capitalism.
Highlights the 'doing what is right' -vs- milking the cash cow hypocrisy of corporate fascists.
( eg. Yahoo's turning over IP address information of dissidents to Beijing for arrest.
FoxNews/SkyNews obsequiousness in China; Murdoch said: "It may or may not be
torture, but it increases shareholder value." )
raum sez:"Your understanding of Chinese sensibilities is very off."
WRONG.
To quote raum's own words: "You don't read very much, do you?"

WRONG AGAIN.
What have you been snorting?
What they 'should be', and reality are different things.
The Olympics have always been a political football -- 1936, 1972, 1980...
To say otherwise is a sign of willfull ignorance.

Re: "Book 'Em Deng-O" Boycott Beijing Olympics?
i'd have to agree with Oot there. the fucking olympics are everything but politic-free. the olympic commitee are biggest bunch of pimps i've seen in my lifetime. whoring off their little event to whomever can grease their palms the most & even those who can't match the top bid. since the 50's, the reasons for holding that piece of shit have changed radically. the actual sporting competitions run a distant second & are just window dressing. nothing more.
