The Internet is full

It's generally accepted by anyone and everyone in the know that the internet is growing exponentially. To give you an idea of how much and how fast, consider that last year YouTube alone used as much bandwidth as was needed for the entire internet in 2000.
Trouble is, this growing demand for video and TV download services such as the Beeb's recently launched and already successful iPlayer is overloading networks so badly that some particularly gloomy experts are predicting the internet could simply grind to a virtual standstill by 2010. They are calling it the broadband crunch.
The problem lies not in the fibre optics and underground cables of the main internet 'motorways' which have huge capacities and are constantly upgraded with new technologies but with the 'last mile' routers, switchers and copper wires running from exchanges directly into the home.
"There are going to be some real crunches, some real hard times coming. It's because of the market and the business models which don't see a way of making a profit," commented Scott Bradner, technology security officer at Harvard University ahead of an 'End of the Internet' debate happening in Boston this month.
Essentially, internet providers are too busy undercutting each other to maximise short term profits without considering the long term implications of neglecting the infrastructure.

Re: The Internet Is Full
You could be right.
I just found this....
The end of the internet
;)
There are many fibre-to-the-threshold communities where I live.
It is generally a package deal with new homes or condominiums
that fiber is included in new construction.
Retrofit to older areas is going to take a while, possibly decades.
So, if you want fibre with your breakfast, move to a new house.
In the meantime, backbone providers like Bell and Rogers are throttling
bandwidth of P2P users. If you want to download pirated songs and
videos, then it will now take you 20 times longer to do it.
Tough!
OR... you can purchase the new (same speed as the old) super-duper
guaranteed bandwidth package for twice the price. Good old
pricing policies will save the internet.
Who'd a thunkit... it's the economy, stupid!

Unfortunately, this appears to be the norm for most business (not only internet providers).

Re: The Internet Is Full
I mean, to me, that's a fucking staggering fact...If I'm not mistaken, the Napster revolution had already taken place by Y2K, so its not like the net was still new...To experience that much of a rapid growth in such a short time is something I can barely wrap my head around...I mean to consider it, lets look at even the tech and PC industry, which is also constantly evolving...The computer I had in 2000 would still be a better than decent computer right now, and is probably still faster and more serviceable than brand new comps being sold in stores today...What has happened in the PC industry has taken far more time to see such a big leap...But the difference is that is the better technology gets, the cheaper shit becomes...Sure, its expensive when it comes out, but the difference in computation times for a state of the art PC and one that came out in say 2000 top of the line is probably less than 90 seconds...Kumicho wrote:To give you an idea of how much and how fast, consider that last year YouTube alone used as much bandwidth as was needed for the entire internet in 2000.

Guys. South Park S12E06 - http://www.mininova.org/tor/1330842
The episode about the end of the internet. I can see it happening exactly how the beginning started. We better stock up on our movies and pr0n or else we'll all end up like Stan's dad.
