Dog meat off the menu during Beijing Olympics

BEIJING — Canine cuisine is being sent to the doghouse during next month's Beijing Olympic Games.

Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants, and Beijing tourism officials are telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

Waiters and waitresses should "patiently" suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau Vice Director Xiong Yumei.

Dog, known in Chinese as "xiangrou," or "fragrant meat," is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

Beijing isn't the first Olympic host to slap a ban on the dish.

South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of "foods deemed unsightly." After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.

Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

The reason Asians eat dogmeat according to my wifey, who's Korean,is because there is a certain something in that patricular meat that warms up their blood during wintertime. It's definitely not a falsehood as one bud of mine who teaches there said he's eaten it a few times & says it really does warm you up to the point of perspiration.. & ditto was said by a friend who lived in a Chinese pronvince studying for 5 years. Both Koreans & Chinese eat a particular breed of wild dog that looks like an Australian Dingo. It's not housepets or strays etc. I have no idea why Filipinos or Laotians eat them though as both countries are humid as fuck. Well, maybe Filos in the mountain regions as i believe it's cold there all year around.

I heard it was good but I don't think I'm willing to try it.

I'll try anything once, heh...I think its a little disturbing though, they're willing to remove items that are a part of their culture from the menu in sake of the games...Seems a little...Wrong...

I spent 6 years in Korea, seeing them eat dogs like it was going out of style has bothered me to this day.

I guess if you're happy eating a cow then there should be no reason not to try a dog!
Although I have yet to be brave enough to give it a bash! I'm off to Beijing for a bit of the olympics & was thinking about giving the dog a try but I wouldnt be surprised if the government make the dog scarce..
