DVD-R are the more familiar file type, but you could have a burner that only works with DVD+R...I remember when burners first came out and were expensive as fuck, I bought one that would read both kinds, but only burn on +...

Shit, I hadn't even thought of that, you may want to grab some DVD+R's out the front isle for cheap and see if you fare any better...
