Airport scanners will show genitals

October 15, 2008

Melbourne, Australia -- Domestic travellers leaving Melbourne Airport over the next six weeks will be asked to test new security scanners that can see through clothing.

- Body scanner trial - Voluntary testing - 'Possible to see genitals'

Transport security authorities are trialling the new "X-ray backscatter" body scanner , which has been described by critics as a "virtual strip search".

The scanner uses a low energy X-ray to reveal any objects, metal or otherwise, under a person's clothing, including body features. The testing will be entirely voluntary during the trial , which is being undertaken to test how the new scanners would affect the flow of passengers through the security point.

I read about that too. It is currently only at one of the small players in Oz domestic air transport and it is totally voluntary to step into the device. This means you first go through the main metal detector - if you set off the metal detector you then have the option of the hand-held metal scanning wand or to step in the new body scanning machine.

I'm interested to see how this catches on.

I have a feeling these sort of devices will be forced upon us in the near future...

Isn't everything forced on us in these post-millenial times?

I tried to find the perfect Playboy cartoon that would compliment this post, but it is butt-hard to find it on the net. :disappoint:

All you need is a man behind the screen with a woman airport security person saying, "I'll be, it really is a banana...."

If this isn't an invasion of privacy, then I don't know what is
"If there were no eternal consciousness in a man, if at the bottom of everything there were only a wild ferment, a power that twisting in dark passions produced everything great or inconsequential; if an unfathomable insatiable emptiness lay hid beneath everything, what would life be but despair?"

Soren Kierkegaard
