Serenity is a Sci-Fi movie, based on a Sci-Fi TV show called Firefly. This was written by the same guy who did the series Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
The movie is great. Great enough to go buy the series, which I have never seen.
Premise: America and China form a international alliance, which leads to a fusion of trheir cultures, and ends most war, as countries bow to the superpower. With no war, and the advances in medicine, Earth was quickly overpoplated. The Earth, private parties, and even corporations sent forth fleets of starships to terra-form (i.e. make inhabitable) any planets they could find. They find no dominant Alien life on any planet. This essentially creates human "manifest destiny" as the first rule of space exploration. Fast forward, to the future: In order to regulate the expansion, an "Alliance" ruled by a "Parliment" seeks to maintain a control of the human presence in the galaxy. The notion spreads, as a means to avoid piracy and protect commerce, but quickly becomes corrupted into a "Religious Authority" with Buddhism's commonality with Christianity, a "all-encompassing" rule of peace being strictly enforced. They essentially work to create a galaxy without sin, and thus, without strife.. A succession from the Alliance leads to the War for Galatic Independence, but they are overpowered at the Battle of Serenity and the war is reduced to a hopeless fight, that has all but been forgotten wth all the propoganda they have spread. This happened because the expansion into space, it is believed, has led to the discovery of an outer limit of existence. Legend has those who have looked into that void have gone mad, succombed to an inhuman rage and became Reapers; with rituals of self-mutilation, rape, cannabalism, and worse. The war is over, and the Alliance has, in its infinite wisdom is seeking to bring all the dregs of a galatic expansion together to keep people safe from what they would become were anarchy to rule humanity again.
One of the things they need for this is "Readers;" powerful psychics who can hunt out where humanity has spread to. They are also powerful warriors, being able to anticipate their enemies movement, and inherit the combat abilities of those they "Read." Developing Readers is still in its development stages, and there are not many. A young girl named River Tam is one such Reader, one of the most powerful,.. and yet one of the most resistent to the control of the alliance. This has led to her diagnoses psychosis. Still, she remained one of the most powerful, and several key members of Parliment have personally witnessed her as the greatest sign of success, and the continuance of funding for the project development.
Then, they begin to question... if she can read anyone, and they have personally witnessed this - Has she read them? Does she now know their darkest secrets and shadows that would compomise the power of the Paliment, and the truth they seek to promote? The peace they seek to enforce? This quickly seals the plan for her demise... or so they think. Were they Readers, they would know her brother has abandoned his practice as a doctor, and signed on with a colorful and dynamic crew of revolutionary veterans who are reduced to interstellar piracy and guerilla smuggling operations. He has become their onboard medical officer in exchange for them helping him rescue his little sister. And they are on approach to the research facility...
But Malcolm Reynolds, the captian of the crew knows well the power of the Alliance, for he is the sole survior of the final Battle at Serenity; a former Alliance Soldier of its former soldiers who betrayed them and joined the Independence who once believed the lies he witnessed take hold of human existence in the Galaxy before he saw them destroy what he thought he was fighting for..
excellent premise, powerful dialogue, and anyone with a genuine love of nautical adventure, or sci-fi, or even politics will feel completely entetained. Action fanswil love the scenes that involves action, but there are some dry spots full of substance.

Well, I don't have much faith in Wheedon, but your description does sound pretty interesting. I might download it.

I was a fan of the series when the DVD's were available, missed it when it WAS on TV and i'm VERY happy to have missed it. They fucked up the chronology of the show, eliminated the pilot, changed schedules, etc. in short, FOX used every trick possible to get the shit off the air ASAP because they thought it had a weak response. This, of course had a lot to do with the fact that Firefly (the original series) had no "aliens", no Lucas-style dialogue, no lasers and a whole lot of politics.
Peep the DVD's (with the correct timeline) and then watch the movie. If you prefer your storylines a bit chunkier than:
"It's because I'm so in love"
"No, it's because I'm so in love with you"
Then by all means, enjoy.
There IS however, the added bonus of watching Morena Baccarin look flawless in every take, if you don't care for intelligent sci-fi.

"Lucas-style dialogue?" Please. That man couldn't write to save his life. Have you seen the last 3 Star Wars? lol
FOX is terrible for fucking shows up. It seems they always cancel the good shows and keep the shit shows.

Yeah... I watched this movie earlier today... I think saying I was severely disappointed would be an extreme understatement.
Most of the shit raum mentioned in his post was either summed up in the first 5 minutes, or was mentioned in the series.
The movie is actually about the crew of the Serenity ship trying to uncover a Parliamentary secret that River remembers. An assassin, sent by the Parliament, chases the crew, and of course they bump into the Reapers a couple of times as well.
The movie was poorly written, which shouldn†™ ¢‚¬„¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¢†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¡¢‚¬Å¡‚¬†™‚¢‚¢¢¢‚¬Å¡‚¬¦‚¾¢‚¬Å¡‚¢t really be a surprise considering it was written by Josh Whedon. Whedon did a piss poor job of developing the movie. Instead he wrote it like a season finale, which alienates viewers like me.
P.S. I almost forgot... Josh Whedon... the fuckin moron... made his own movie pointless when he said the Parliament had been weakened, but it wouldn't be defeated. Honestly... he should just stop writing! lol

Personally, I liked the series and the movie. It is definitely not your typical sci-fi shooter type and relied more on the characters. At the very least, you have to marvel at the creativeness of Whedon.

Re: Serenity
what the hell... here is the 1st episode (the original pilot and not the one Fox used for the pilot).
Think of it as a space western and your more likely to enjoy it.
