NEW YORK (AP) - John Madden’s last game as a football announcer was a thrilling Super Bowl decided in the final seconds.

The perfect ending to a run as one of sports’ most popular broadcasters, now that Madden called it a career Thursday. Yet it didn’t fit Madden’s style to think about his retirement that way.

“I’m a grinder,” he said on his Bay Area radio show. “You just grind and get through it and when it’s all over, you think about it. You don’t rush into any decisions.”

For most of my life I always thought Madden was the most overrated boob on TV spouting off obvious stuff that anyone let alone a former football coach could notice but the last 5 years or so he actually got pretty good. Now did he actually get smarter when most people his age are getting senile or did I just get softer? Maybe Michaels had something to do with it? I don't know but now I'm kinda going to miss him. :?

I loved him as the coach of the Raiders, but hated him when he got in the broadcast booth. I considered him to be pompous and overbearing. I agree though that he softened a bit the last few years, but still the sound of his voice would just set my teeth on edge. I always kept the remote with the mute button handy.
