I quite like the Apple's laptops. The hardware alone is the reason I'd consider a purchase.

I gather you might be American? Unfortunately the rest of the world doesn't get access to the same technology or the same price points. Most places outside America tend to get price gouged a fair bit.
The Dell 14z isn't available in the wider world, at least not to me. Even if it were, I'd keep on walking given my experience with my last Dell laptop.
If you've ever had much to do with laptops, service can be a bit of a nightmare. I can only speak for where I live, but getting your laptop attended to if it breaks can be quite an ordeal.
Dell XPS laptops are not too bad because you get a technician actually coming to your house or place of work to fix it usually within 7 days. Parts can sometimes make that longer. If it isn't XPS than service can be a pain.
Lenovo only really has decent service if you are a company with a company account. Their laptops aren't really anything fancy. Where I live they are overpriced.
Sony has horrid service and disables cpu assisted virtualisation in their bioses. Their laptops look nice but are insanely expensive.
The macbooks/macbook pros are cheaper than Lenovo and Sony by a decent margin. They also have Apple megastores near me so getting it repaired is a trip down the street + whatever time it takes to repair.
I get a lot of laptops because I change jobs a fair bit and I haven't been impressed with the "PC" offering.
If I had to put my own money down right now for a machine I could use for work I'd get a Macbook Pro 13inch. But that is just me based on the trouble I have had getting things repaired and price. Oh and yeah the hardware look is nice.

I've been working on Dell laptops for over 8 years. I never had a problem with service because I know how to repair laptops. So I merely tell them what is wrong and get the parts sent to me. So you are gauging your rating based upon service of some tech over the phone rather than the quality of the product itself? That's not the best way to rate a product IMO. Dell quality isn't questionable at all in my book. Heck, I really like their new Latitude E series. Very nice construction and quality.
I can tell you quite a bit about Apple MacBooks having experience on them as well. I really dislike their white exterior because it's easy to scratch and show wear and tear. You can't replace their batteries easily. You have to physically open the laptop just to switch it out...one of the worst traits of MacBooks. The only positive I have ever liked was the fact that their power connectors are magnetic so if you accidentally pull on it you won't jerk your laptop onto the floor. I wouldn't pay the premium for that though.
Not to mention that most software is made for Windows. You could argue VMWare Fusion for Mac but that adds MORE COST for the VMWare Fusion license as well as ADDITIONAL cost for the Windows OS license.
Macs are pure garbage for their price. I do quite enjoy debunking all of the praise that Mac fanatics have for them.
